Imtiaz Ali Clarifies "Good Girl" Remark on Deepika Padukone, Says Can't Be Mean to Her

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has clarified his recent remarks about Deepika Padukone's casting in the 2012 film Cocktail. The clarification follows a viral video where Imtiaz discussed how Deepika's "good girl" image contrasted with her real personality. Deepika has not yet publicly responded to the comments.

"To be mean to you is janam mein to possible nahin hai...": Imtiaz Ali clarifies "good girl image" remark on Deepika Padukone

Mumbai, May 26

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has clarified his recent remarks made around the casting of actor Deepika Padukone in the 2012 film 'Cocktail'.

The filmmaker shared a clip of his interview and expressed immense admiration for Deepika Padukone, explaining that he could never be mean to her.

"My dearest and loveliest @deepikapadukone, you are my pal, my buddy, my safe option for humour. I think you will never misunderstand my wannabe fun remarks because you more than anyone else know how much I love you, admire you, understand you, appreciate you... but I have been told you might misunderstand and be hurt. So I am telling you pl don't... To be mean to you is janam mein to possible nahin hai..." Imtiaz Ali wrote.

Sending her best wishes to the actor, he added, "I never thought I would write such a disclaimer to you, but it's been a while, and I didn't want to take a chance. Wish you the best and love always."

Speaking of which, the clarification comes at a time when a video of Imtiaz Ali's remarks on the casting of the original 'Cocktail' movie has been going viral on social media.

In the video, the filmmaker revealed how he found the character of Veronica "different" from Deepika's image at the time of its making.

"She (Deepika) called me, and I asked her to play Veronica. Veronica is so different from what Deepika's image was at that time. Since I had been doing parties with her, I know how crazy and wild she can be. She was otherwise projected to be such a good girl at that time. Now people have seen through the facade. I thought this would be a new thing for Deepika to do," Imtiaz said in the viral interview.

The 'Fighter' actor is yet to react to the comments.

Honestly, Imtiaz ka clarification bahut sweet hai. But the original interview was a bit off — calling Deepika's 'good girl image' a facade? She was a young actress, why frame it like she was hiding something? Actors are allowed to have both private and public personas. Still, I'm glad he cleared the air. Cocktail remains one of my favorite movies ❤️

Such a heartfelt clarification! Imtiaz and Deepika's friendship is goals. The way he says "janam mein toh possible nahin" — only an Indian director-friend can say that with that emotion. And honestly, Deepika's wild side in Cocktail was what made Veronica iconic. Ab toh sab accept kar liya hai ke she's versatile. Love the bond! 🔥

While I appreciate the clarification, I can understand why some people were upset. Calling someone's image a 'facade' can sound a bit dismissive, even if it wasn't meant that way. But Imtiaz's love for Deepika is evident. Cinema mein such genuine friendships are rare. Hope this doesn't become a bigger controversy — we need more filmmakers who care about their actors' feelings. 👏

Always fascinated by how Bollywood friendships play out in public. In Hollywood, this level of personal clarification would be rare. Imtiaz's statement is beautiful — "to be mean to you is janam mein toh possible nahin hai" is pure gold. Deepika has grown so much since Cocktail. Can't wait to see them collaborate again! 🌟
