Massive mandate reflects public trust in NDA govt's development work in Assam: Minister
Guwahati, May 20
Assam Minister and President of Asom Gana Parishad, Atul Bora, said on Wednesday that the overwhelming mandate secured by the NDA alliance in the recent Assembly elections reflected the people's confidence in the development initiatives undertaken by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government in the state.
Speaking to reporters here ahead of the first session of the newly constituted Assam Assembly, Minister Bora added that the scale of the electoral victory was unprecedented in post-Independence Assam politics.
"The people of Assam have given a huge mandate to the NDA alliance. After Independence, Assam has rarely witnessed such a decisive public verdict while forming a government," the Minister said.
He added that the election results clearly demonstrated public approval of the work carried out by the BJP-led alliance government, especially during the tenure of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from 2021 to 2026.
"This mandate proves that the people appreciated the developmental work carried out during the NDA government's tenure, particularly under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the last term," Minister Bora said.
The AGP President also spoke about preparations for the first Assembly session beginning on Thursday, where newly elected legislators will take oath.
He said the NDA alliance had formally proposed the name of senior leader Ranjit Kumar Dass for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
"Nomination papers have already been submitted proposing the name of Ranjit Kumar Dass. The BJP, AGP and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) have jointly proposed and supported his candidature," Minister Bora told reporters.
According to the Assam Minister, several senior leaders and newly elected MLAs of the alliance parties were present during the filing of the nomination papers, including Ministers and legislators from different coalition partners.
The AGP leader also said that all 126 newly elected MLAs of the Assembly are expected to take oath during the opening proceedings of the House on Thursday.
The NDA alliance, led by the BJP, retained power in Assam with a comfortable majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections, while regional ally AGP once again emerged as an important coalition partner in the government.
The four-day Assembly session is expected to witness the introduction of several important Bills and policy discussions by the new Assam government.

The mandate is indeed historic. But as a citizen, I'd urge the NDA government to not get complacent. The real challenge is to sustain this momentum and ensure benefits reach every village, not just Guwahati and Jorhat. Hope the new Speaker ensures smooth functioning of the House! 🤞
Development is good, but we must also think about the indigenous communities and language preservation. The government should balance progress with cultural protection. The tea garden workers' welfare is another area needing attention. Let's see how the new session tackles these issues.🙏
As someone from the Brahmaputra valley, I've seen roads getting better and electricity supply improving. But what about healthcare in rural areas? Many primary health centers still lack basic medicines. Hope the new government prioritizes health infrastructure too. Overall though, development is happening. 😊
The mandate is indeed massive. But we should also acknowledge that the opposition failed to present a credible alternative. The NDA got a clear majority because people saw results - like the Bogibeel Bridge and better connectivity to remote areas. But unemployment among youth is still a concern. Let's hope the new term tackles that. 💪
I'm an American who follows Indian politics out of interest. It's fascinating how Assam has transformed politically under Sarma - from insurgency to development focus. The 126 MLA strong assembly with a clear mandate is rare anywhere in the world. Hope they use this opportunity wisely to tackle floods and infrastructure. Great to see democracy working!
