Manisha Koirala gets nostalgic over '1942: A Love Story', calls Rajeshwari a life-changing character

Actress Manisha Koirala turned nostalgic as her 1994 romantic classic 1942: A Love Story gears up for a theatrical re-release on August 21.
Looking back at the film, the actress reflected in how essaying the role of Rajeshwari in the movie, remains one of the most transformative experiences of her career.
Taking to her social media account, Manisha dropped a still of herself as Rajeshwari from the movie, and penned an emotional note reflecting on the timeless love the film continues to receive.
"Rajeshwari changed my life in so many ways. Every time I revisit #1942ALoveStory, I am reminded of the love it continues to receive from all of you. So happy it's returning to cinemas, beautifully restored for a whole new generation. Back in cinemas from 21st August 2026," she wrote.
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 1942: A Love Story was set against the backdrop of India's Quit India Movement and blended romance with the country's freedom struggle. Manisha essayed the role of Rajeshwari Pathak, the daughter of a British loyalist, who falls in love with Narendra Singh, played by Anil Kapoor, the son of a freedom fighter.
The film also starred Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa, Pran, Chandni and Brian Glover in pivotal roles. Apart from its compelling narrative, the movie is remembered for R.D. Burman's final complete film score, featuring evergreen songs such as Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Kuch Na Kaho, Rim Jhim Rim Jhim and Rooth Na Jaana.
Talking about Manisha Koirala, she went on to become one of Hindi cinema's most acclaimed actresses.
She made her Bollywood debut with Saudagar in 1991 before delivering memorable performances in films such as Bombay, Khamoshi: The Musical, Dil Se.., Gupt, Company and Lajja. In recent years, she has been praised for her performances in Shehzada, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar and Lust Stories.

Honestly, this film is a piece of our cinematic heritage. The way it blended the Quit India Movement with a love story was so unique for its time. I've heard so much about this film from my Indian friends, but never had the chance to watch it properly. The restored version seems like the perfect opportunity. While I completely admire this film and respect Manisha ji's craft, I hope the re-release also sparks conversations about how the freedom movement was depicted. The movie is beautiful, but history is complex. That being said, the music alone is worth the ticket price - R.D. Burman was a genius. Rim Jhim Rim Jhim during monsoon is pure magic. 🌧️
