"Heartiest congratulations to our young star, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa on becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess title. Wishing you continued success and many more achievements in the years ahead," he said in an X post.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, on the other hand, congratulated Praggnanandhaa, saying, "Congratulations to Praggnanandhaa on winning the Norway Chess title. His success is a testament to India's rich chess tradition and highlights the strength of the new generation of Indian players who continue to excel on the global stage."
The Norway Chess 2026 tournament featured a world-class field, including World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, reigning world champion India's D Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So and Vincent Keymer, making it one of the strongest events on the international chess calendar.
The victory over Keymer came on the back of Praggnanandhaa's wins against Alireza Firouzja, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and reigning world champion D Gukesh over the previous four days. The tournament also saw Praggnanandhaa complete a rare double win over Carlsen.

Nice to see cross-party appreciation for once. But honestly, let's focus on the real hero - a 20-year-old who conquered a field with Magnus, Alireza, and the world champion. The MEA spokesperson's comment about "new generation of Indian players" is spot on. 🔥
While I appreciate the congratulations from leaders, I wish we'd give this level of attention to all our sportspersons, not just when they win big. Praggnanandhaa has been grinding for years - this victory is the result of relentless practice, not just talent. Kudos to his family and coaches too! 🙌
As an American who follows chess, this is incredible! Praggnanandhaa beating Carlsen twice in one tournament is like a young tennis player beating Federer twice at Wimbledon. India's chess depth is unmatched right now - Gukesh, Pragg, Vidit - what a generation! 🤯
Every Indian parent needs to see this! 🎯 Praggnanandhaa didn't come from a wealthy background - his parents sacrificed so much for his chess career. This is what determination looks like. And seeing leaders from all parties unite to praise him - that's the India we want to see! 🇮🇳♟️
What a tournament! Defeating Keymer, Firouzja, Magnus AND the reigning world champion Gukesh in consecutive days - this is prime Anand-level dominance. Norway Chess is one of the toughest tournaments out there, and Pragg made it look easy. The future of Indian chess is truly golden. ✨
