Maharashtra: Fire breaks out at furniture shops in Pune's Handewa
Pune, June 16
A massive fire broke out at four furniture shops in Maharashtra's Handewadi area, a fire officer said on Tuesday. No loss of life has been reported in the incident.
Fire Officer, Pune Fire Department, Sameer Shaikh, told ANI that the cause of the fire is being ascertained.
He said, "Despite the cause of the fire being unclear, it spread rapidly due to highly flammable materials. Firefighting operations required significant manpower, involving vehicles from five fire stations, four water tankers, and several private water bowsers."
He further added, "As per initial assessment, the fire affected four furniture-related establishments--a showroom at the front and a factory at the rear. However, an adjacent hotel and another factory were saved"
"Fortunately, no casualties have been reported."
Further details are awaited.

It's good that the hotel and other factory were saved... but four shops destroyed means many livelihoods affected. Hope the owners had insurance. Also, every monsoon season we hear of such fires due to short circuits - Pune Municipal Corporation should enforce better electrical wiring norms in industrial areas. 🤔
Impressive response from the fire department - 5 stations, 4 tankers and private bowsers. But why does it take such a massive fire to get this kind of coordination? Preventive measures would save so much more. Good to hear no casualties though.
Handewadi has become a hub for furniture manufacturing over the years but the infrastructure hasn't kept up. Narrow roads, haphazard parking, and no fire hydrants in many places. The firemen did a great job but the system failed these small business owners. Need better urban planning bhai.
Every time I buy furniture from such places, I wonder about fire safety inside their godowns. This is a wake-up call for all furniture dealers in the area. Also, hope the authorities investigate the cause thoroughly - could be anything from electrical fault to negligence. Stay safe, Pune! 😥
"Cause being ascertained" - this is standard line in such incidents. I hope the local police and fire department actually do a proper investigation instead of just filing a report. These small businesses are the backbone of our economy and they need better protection. At least no lives lost this time.
