Amazon Drops Luca Guadagnino's Sam Altman Film 'Artificial' – Find New Home

Amazon MGM Studios has dropped Luca Guadagnino's nearly finished film 'Artificial', which stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The decision comes after Amazon struck a massive $50 billion partnership with OpenAI. The film will be shopped to other studios for release. Luca Guadagnino's nearly finished Sam Altman movie, 'Artificial', has been dropped by Amazon MGM Studios, reported Variety.

According to the outlet, the film, starring Andrew Garfield as the controversial OpenAI CEO, will be shopped to other studios.

The move notably comes after Amazon struck a massive partnership with the tech company in February to expand OpenAI's use of Amazon Web Services and develop custom AI models, which included a 50 billion USD investment on Amazon's part.

"We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker, not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue," a spokesperson for Amazon said as quoted by Variety.

"We believe that 'Artificial' will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home," added spokesperson as quoted by Variety.

Besides Garfield, "Artificial" supports a huge cast including Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Yura Borisov as former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk.

Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, Angus Imrie, Chris O'Dowd and Mark Rylance also feature.

The film was written by 'SNL' alum Simon Rich and focuses on the brief period Altman was fired from his position at OpenAI in 2023 and then rehired.

Can't wait to see Andrew Garfield as Altman! He's got the perfect mix of charisma and awkwardness. But dropping a nearly finished film - that's a big loss for Amazon. Hope some other studio picks it up fast. 🤞

The Indian tech community is watching this closely. OpenAI's drama is like a Bollywood blockbuster - boardroom politics, sudden exits, dramatic returns. Just missing the item numbers! 😄

My concern is why make a film about someone who's essentially a corporate executive? There are real heroes in India working on AI for agriculture, healthcare, education. This seems like Western narcissism at its finest. 🤷‍♂️

The cast is insane - Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, yesss! And Billie Lourd? Mark Rylance? This is going to be a masterpiece. Guadagnino doesn't miss. 🎬

Amazon investing $50 billion in OpenAI and then dropping this film? There's some serious corporate politics happening behind the scenes. The movie probably hit too close to home. 🍿
