Keel-laying of fourth next-gen offshore patrol vessel for Indian coast guard held at MDL Mumbai
Mumbai, June 25
In a significant boost to India's maritime security capabilities and indigenous shipbuilding sector, the keel-laying ceremony of the fourth Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel for the Indian Coast Guard was held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in Mumbai on Thursday.
The vessel is part of a contract for six NGOPVs awarded to MDL by the Indian Coast Guard on December 20, 2023. Designed, developed and being constructed indigenously, the ships are aligned with the Government of India's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and aim to strengthen the country's maritime surveillance and coastal security architecture.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, underscoring the importance of the project in enhancing India's strategic maritime capabilities.
An MDL representative highlighted the shipyard's commitment to indigenous defence manufacturing and timely project execution.
According to an official statement, the NGOPVs will be equipped with modern machinery and advanced systems, enabling the Indian Coast Guard to undertake a wide range of missions, including coastal security, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and protection of offshore assets.
The project is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening India's strategic autonomy while enhancing the operational preparedness of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding the nation's maritime interests.

Impressive project, but I hope the delivery timelines stick. MDL has a mixed track record. Six vessels by 2026? Let's see. Still, any boost to indigenous shipbuilding is welcome!
Finally, some real action on coastal security! The Coast Guard has been under-equipped for too long. These NGOPVs with modern systems will really help in search and rescue and patrolling our vast coastline. 👌
Good initiative, but we need more than just keel-laying. The real test is timely delivery and quality. MDL has been slow in the past—hope they step up now. Also, why only 6? We need at least 20 such vessels for proper coverage.
As a foreigner living in Mumbai, I appreciate India's push for self-reliance in defence. The Coast Guard does a solid job keeping our seas safe. This is good news for trade and security in the region.
Proud moment for Indian shipbuilding! MDL has been doing great work—remember the INS Kalvari? These NGOPVs will be a game-changer for our maritime domain awareness. Chalo, Aatmanirbhar Bharat! 🚢✨
