Kashi's 'pink meenakari' gets global acclaim, receiving orders from US and Dubai
Varanasi, June 30
Kashi'' centuries-old traditional art of 'Pink Meenakari' is getting international spotlight and the jewellery crafted using this art form is now making a distinct mark, both domestically and abroad.
The artisans in Kashi, are now receiving orders from various countries ranging from Gulf nations to the United States, creating new employment and income opportunities for those associated with this traditional craft.
Pink Meenakari, also called Gulabi Meenakari, is a delicate enameling art form, indigenous to Varanasi.
Its recent recognition under the GI (Geographical Indication) tag has made it a talking point in global circles, spurring its demand -- both in domestic and global markets.
According to the artisans, foreign clients often share designs tailored to their preferences and modern trends.
Based on these designs, Varanasi's craftsmen create stunning jewellery featuring the intricate detailing characteristic of traditional Pink Meenakari. These products are garnering attention as well as appreciation in the international market for their quality and handcrafted excellence.
Ramesh Kumar Vishwakarma, a national award-winning Pink Meenakari artist, told IANS that his family has been associated with this art form since 1982.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the global recognition to this fading craft.
He noted that gifts made of Pink Meenakari were presented to foreign heads of state and dignitaries by the Prime Minister at various international forums --including the G-7 summit -- thereby giving the art form a new global identity.
He mentioned that jewellery crafted by him was showcased at several international events, including the Dubai Expo, which gave a significant boost to his business.
He also expressed gratitude to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying that the 'One District, One Product' (ODOP) scheme played a pivotal role in securing new markets and widespread recognition for Pink Meenakari.
He added that he was receiving regular orders from numerous countries, including Australia, France, Germany, the US, Israel, Italy, Canada, and Dubai.
The demand for jewellery featuring Kashi's Pink Meenakari is steadily rising among international customers, allowing him and many like him to proudly showcase Varanasi's cultural heritage on the global stage.

Great to see PM Modi promoting our heritage at G7 and other forums. But we need more grassroots support too - training for young artisans, better raw material access, and fair pricing. The ODOP scheme is a start, but let's not stop here.
As someone from Varanasi, this makes me emotional. My grandmother had pink meenakari bangles that were passed down. Seeing this craft get international orders from US and Dubai is incredible. The artisans deserve every bit of this success 👏👏
Finally some positive news! While we fight over politics, our craftsmen are quietly winning hearts worldwide. I hope this means more jobs for local youth and stops the migration from villages. Well done to Ramesh ji and his family for keeping this art alive for 40+ years 🙌
The fact that foreign clients are sending their own designs shows how much they value our craftsmanship. But I hope the essence of traditional pink meenakari isn't lost in catering to global trends. There's something magical about those original Indian motifs. Still, very proud moment for Kashi! ✨
Good to see our traditional arts getting global recognition. But I'm curious - are these orders sustainable? Are the artisans getting fair wages or are middlemen taking big cuts? Hope ODOP ensures direct benefits to the actual craftsmen. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful craft and deserves all the attention 🙏
