Karnataka: Food Safety Department seizes 132 Kg of unfit food during inspections at Bengaluru hotels

The Karnataka Food Safety Department conducted a series of inspections at various hotels across Bengaluru, leading to the seizure and disposal of 132 kg of food articles and 15 litres of used cooking oil.
During the inspection at Hotel Sky in UB City, officials found 45 kg of rotten chicken and beef along with 6 kg of vegetable cutlets and 15 litres of used cooking oil. These food articles, totalling 51 kg, were found unfit for consumption and were discarded or destroyed as per standard procedure.
In a related action, the kitchen of Skyee Lounge on the 16th floor of UB City was ordered to be closed due to unhygienic maintenance.
Officials said that all meat and beef found at the lounge were rotten with fungus, and milk and curd products were discovered with expiry dates from ten days prior.
The enforcement drive also covered the Royal Chain Hotel, where a total of 55 kg of food was seized, including 50 kg of duck and 5 kg of fish.
At Senchez Hotel, authorities seized 3 kg of fish and discarded 7 kg of cake, potatoes, and tacos. Furthermore, 5 kg of green peas were seized from Madras Kitchen, and 5 kg of mushrooms were taken from Tescon Hotel.
According to the department, the total quantity of food articles seized and disposed of during the operation amounted to 132 kg, in addition to 15 litres of used cooking oil.
All seized items were categorised as unfit for human consumption and handled accordingly.

Finally some action being taken! Living in Bengaluru, I've always wondered about the hygiene standards of these big hotels. 132 kg is no joke - imagine how many people could have gotten sick. The government should also publish the names of repeat offenders so we know where to avoid eating.
I moved to Bengaluru from the US two years ago and this confirms my worst fears about eating out. In the US, such violations lead to immediate closure and hefty fines. Here, they just seize the food and move on. We need stricter penalties to actually deter these businesses from cutting corners.
This is exactly why I prefer home-cooked food or small local eateries over these fancy places. Just because they charge Rs. 2000 for a meal doesn't mean they are clean. The 50 kg of rotten duck at Royal Chain Hotel is especially concerning - who knows how many customers were served that during weddings or events? 😡
Good initiative by our Karnataka government! However, I wish they would also focus on Zomato and Swiggy delivery kitchens, which are mostly unregulated. Hotel standards need to be checked regularly. Meanwhile, I'm going to stick to my mess food and avoid eating out for a while! 😅
While the seizure is good, I'm questioning the scale. These are just a few hotels in one inspection! The FSSAI and state food safety teams need to up their game massively. This is a health crisis waiting to happen - food poisoning cases in Bengaluru are already on the rise. More frequent inspections and public display of hygiene ratings should be mandatory.
