Karan Johar defends Alia Bhatt's 'Alpha', says "audience above online negativity and true warriors"
Mumbai, July 4
Filmmaker Karan Johar has come out in support of Alia Bhatt starrer 'Alpha', urging people to avoid toxicity surrounding the efforts of the team.
In an Instagram story, Karan noted how the audience has risen above online negativity and stood as the "true warriors".
"When footfalls are a challenge ALPHA takes a solid start! It emphasises many things... the audience is way above online negativity and they are the true warriors... the stardom and theatrical pull and unquestionable talent of Alia Bhatt and the impact of a big screen spectacle is undebatable and that YRF has a continued franchise and an endeavor to create theatrical tentpole experiences that need our applause and not our toxicity!" the filmmaker wrote.
Karan went on to ask fans to celebrate the essence of cinema as he continued, "Please relax and celebrate that the cinemas are breathing!!! Go watch ALPHA and stop doom scrolling!!"
Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's 'Alpha' has received a lukewarm response from critics and moviegoers alike.
Alpha, the latest instalment in YRF's Spy Universe, also features Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, and a special cameo by Hrithik Roshan.
Despite its star-studded lineup and YRF's spy universe popularity, the film failed to take off as expected, opening to a muted response.
However, according to the makers, the film registered a decent opening at the box office on its first day. 'Alpha' earned Rs 17.42 crore worldwide on the release day, as per YRF.
"India Rs 11.20 crore GBOC (Rs 9.25 crore NBOC) Overseas Rs 6.22 crore GBOC (USD 647k)," the post on YRF's Instagram handle.
Directed by Shiv Rawail, 'Alpha' is the first female-led film in the YRF Spy Universe.
On Friday, Sharavari shared several BTS pictures with her co-star Alia.
"It's officially ALPHA day! Serving some badass action on screen & good energies behind the scenes! #Alpha in cinemas near you," she captioned the post.

I appreciate Karan's sentiment, but honestly, can we talk about the film itself? 🤔 *Alpha* had a lukewarm response for a reason. The story felt rushed, and Hrithik's cameo was the only highlight. Alia is brilliant, no doubt, but even she can't save a weak script. The box office numbers are decent, not great—let's not confuse "supportive audience" with "compromised standards." We need better content, not just star power.
Karan Johar always defends his films with these dramatic posts—it's like his trademark! 😂 But I have to say, *Alpha* is entertaining if you don't overthink it. The action sequences are top-notch, and Alia's presence is magnetic. Maybe the critics expected too much? In India, we love masala entertainers, and this one delivers. True warriors? Maybe. But warriors for good cinema? Debatable.
It's refreshing to see a female-led spy film in Bollywood! *Alpha* may not be perfect, but it's a step forward. Karan's right—audiences are beyond online trolls. I saw it with my family, and we all enjoyed it. The theatre was full, and people clapped during Hrithik's cameo. 🎬
However, I wish they'd focused more on the plot. Still, for a weekend watch, it's a good time-pass. Let's support such attempts, but also demand better writing.
Karan Johar needs to chill with the 'true warriors' narrative. 😅
*Alpha* earned Rs 17 crore—that's decent but not groundbreaking. The YRF spy universe is losing steam after *Pathaan* and *Tiger*. Alia and Sharvari are talented, but the movie felt like a missed opportunity. Instead of calling out toxicity
