Baramulla, May 12

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday led a padyatra in North Kashmir's Baramulla district as part of the ongoing 'Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan', aimed at curbing drug abuse across the Union Territory.

The march witnessed participation from students, youth, civil society members, and district administration officials, highlighting a collective push against the menace of narcotics.

Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised the importance of community-led efforts in tackling drug abuse and urged young people to stay away from substance use.

He reiterated that the administration is committed to taking strict action against drug traffickers while simultaneously focusing on awareness campaigns and rehabilitation initiatives.

Officials said the event concluded with participants taking a pledge to work towards building a drug-free society and a padyatra from Govt Degree College Baramulla to Dak Banglow Baramulla.

The padyatra is part of a 100-day intensive campaign launched by the administration to strengthen public outreach and awareness against drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said over two lakh outreach programmes have been conducted across Jammu and Kashmir as part of the government's campaign against drug abuse, asserting that strict action will continue against drug peddlers across the Union Territory.

Addressing a mega padyatra in Baramulla, he said, the administration and police have intensified awareness and enforcement measures to tackle the growing menace of narcotics.

He lauded the police for acting against drug peddlers and conducting awareness drives among the public. He said the anti-narcotics campaign would be intensified further and no one involved in the illegal drug trade would be spared.

This is commendable. The menace of drugs has seeped into our youth, and it's high time we had a coordinated effort. Two lakh outreach programmes is impressive. But we also need to look at the root causes – unemployment, peer pressure, and the easy availability of synthetic drugs. The police cracking down on traffickers is crucial, but if there are no jobs, there will always be another supplier. Just saying.

As a mother of two teenagers in Baramulla, I feel relieved that such campaigns are happening locally. The padyatra from Degree College to Dak Banglow is a symbolic yet powerful move. It sends a strong message. But I wish the government would also focus on providing better counselling and mental health support for those already addicted. Awareness is good, but action on the ground matters more. Thank you to all the participants, especially the students who walked alongside the LG.

I'm an Australian studying in Kashmir for my research, and I must say this is an encouraging initiative. The community involvement is heartening to see. In many parts of the world, drug abuse is often just a criminal issue, but here they are combining enforcement with rehabilitation and awareness. The locals I spoke to during the march seemed genuinely motivated. Let's hope this 100-day campaign creates lasting change.

Good initiative from LG sahab, but honestly, we need more than just a padyatra and pledges. Drug traffickers are using sophisticated methods, and the police need modern technology and intelligence to catch them. Also, the judicial process should be swift so that these peddlers don't get bail easily. Still, it's a start. Let's see if the 'Nasha Mukt' slogan translates to reality. Fingers crossed. 🤞
