Rishabh Pant's Opening Gamble Backfires as LSG Stumble in IPL 2026 Opener

Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant described his new role as an opener as a "50-50 call" after a modest start in their IPL 2026 opener against Delhi Capitals. The strategic reshuffle saw last season's successful opener Aiden Markram move down to number three and power-hitter Nicholas Pooran batting lower in the order. Pant explained the move was designed to let Pooran dominate the middle overs and to create a left-right combination at the top with Ayush Badoni. Despite the planning, the strategy faltered as Pant was run out early, contributing to LSG's defeat against a DC side that now has five consecutive wins over them.

"It's a 50-50 call": Rishabh Pant reflects on his batting position after unlucky start in IPL 2026 as opener

Rishabh Pant reflects on LSG's batting reshuffle after an unlucky start as opener in IPL 2026, discussing the strategy behind moving Pooran and Markram.

"I think it's a 50-50 call, but we'll see. But you'll definitely see me in the top order. - Rishabh Pant"

Lucknow, April 2

Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant said the decision about him opening the batting in the ongoing Indian Premier League is uncertain, describing it as a "50-50 call," but confirmed that he will definitely feature in the top order.

Pant's move to open the innings didn't go as planned as LSG faced a defeat against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2026 opener on Wednesday. Pant made 7 off 9 and was run out at the non-striker's end.

"I think it's a 50-50 call, but we'll see. But [you'll] definitely see me in the top order," Pant said after the match.

The decision to promote Pant to the opening slot pushed Aiden Markram down to No. 3. This comes despite Markram forming one of the most effective opening partnerships last season alongside Marsh, with the duo registering the second-highest partnership runs of the campaign. Markram also enjoyed his best IPL season, scoring 445 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.82.

The move also saw LSG's big hitter Nicholas Pooran pushed down the order from one down. The position from where he slammed 524 runs at a strike rate of 196.25 last season.

LSG sent Ayush Badoni above Pooran when they lost their second wicket inside the power-play.

Pant explained that the strategy was to let Pooran take charge in the middle overs, while he himself moved up the order. He added that the batting reshuffle with Ayush Badoni was aimed at maintaining a left-right combination at the top to limit the opposition's bowling options. However, Pant admitted the plan didn't fully work as he was dismissed at an untimely moment.

"I think the idea was very simple. Like, [Pooran] is taking charge in the middle overs. He's not batting in the top order anymore because I'm batting up the order," Pant said.

"And the swap [between Pooran and Badoni] happened because, you know, we wanted to explore that lefty-righty option at the top. So, they couldn't bowl a left-arm spinner. Unfortunately, I got out at the wrong time," he concluded.

DC started the 2026 IPL season with a thumping six-wicket win over LSG at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday. DC have now secured five consecutive wins against LSG in the IPL, making them the third team against whom DC has achieved such a streak.

It's just the first match, guys! Give him a chance. He's coming back from that horrible injury and finding his rhythm. The intent to take responsibility at the top is good. One run-out doesn't define the strategy. #KeepFaith 💙

The logic is sound – left-right combo to negate match-ups. But pushing Pooran down when he was so destructive at one-down last season? That's a big gamble. Hope the management knows what they're doing. LSG's batting order looks confused.

Feel so bad for him, getting run out at the non-striker's end is just plain unlucky! 😣 He took the bold call as captain and it didn't work first time. But true champions learn and adapt. Waiting for Pant to explode in the coming matches!

Interesting tactical shift. As an outsider watching, the disruption to two in-form players (Markram & Pooran) for one experiment seems high-risk. The "50-50 call" comment suggests even Pant isn't fully convinced. Might need to revert quickly if it fails again.

Honestly, I trust Pant's cricket brain. He's a fighter. If he believes opening gives the team the best balance, we should back him. But please, don't keep Pooran waiting till the 15th over! He needs time to settle too. Jaldi se balance mil jaaye! 🙏
