Israel's Green Energy Surpasses Coal by 1.6 Times in 2025

Israel's Electricity Authority reported that in 2025, renewable and green energy production was 1.6 times higher than coal production. Despite the ongoing war, record renewable energy connections of 1.3 GW were achieved, the highest in five years. The report highlights a significant reduction in pollutant emissions and unprecedented investments in the electricity grid. The increase was driven by the maturation of high-voltage generation and storage projects into commercial operation.

Israel's production in renewable and green energies 1.6 times higher than coal

Tel Aviv, May 29

Israel's Electricity Authority report revealed that, despite the war, in 2025, the percentage of production in renewable and green energies was 1.6 times higher than production in coal.

In addition, there was a significant reduction in pollutant emissions in the electricity sector through record production from renewable energy compared to coal, despite the war, unprecedented investments in the development of the electricity grid that led to a decrease in minutes of non-supply (power outages), a significant increase in private production, and more.

A renewable energy status report is also being published along with it. The abbreviated report shows that in 2025, renewable facilities with a capacity of approximately 1.3 GW of renewable energy were connected, which is the highest number of constructions and connections of green energy facilities since renewables entered the Israeli economy.

This is in relation to the scope of connections in the last 5 years, which averaged approximately 0.9 GW per year. The increase was due to the maturation of high-voltage generation and storage projects into commercial operation.

Good for them, but let's not forget the context—Israel has abundant solar resources and a small geographic area. For India, a massive and diverse country, scaling renewables is a different ball game. Still, their reduction in pollutant emissions during wartime is commendable.

Connecting 1.3 GW of renewable capacity in a year—that's the kind of pace we need in India! Even with their war challenges, they've averaged 0.9 GW annually. We have the potential to do so much more if we streamline approvals and grid infrastructure. Well done, Israel!

It's heartening to see green energy growth despite conflict. But I wonder—what about the energy equity aspect? In India, we talk about just transition. I hope Israel's renewable boom doesn't come at the cost of marginalized communities. Still, a step in the right direction.

Amazing! While we argue over coal vs renewables in India, Israel quietly shows the way. Their reduction in power outages is key—renewables often get blamed for grid instability. They're proving it can work with proper planning. Imagine what we could do with our sunshine!

Impressive, but I'm cautious about celebrating too much. The report says 'despite the war'—but wars consume massive energy and resources. Is the renewable growth just because coal plants were damaged? We need more transparency. Still, the trend is positive.
