Israel Completes $66M Marine Defence Project to Protect Coastal Cliffs

Israel has completed its largest marine defence project, involving the construction of 12 breakwaters on the coastal cliff strip in central Netanya. The $66 million project was led by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and managed by the Government Company for the Protection of Mediterranean Coastal Cliffs. Approximately 3.5 km of expanded cliff beach will soon be reopened to the public, protecting lives and vital infrastructure. The project combines preservation of infrastructure with accessibility of a valuable natural resource.

Israel's largest Marine Defence project completed

Tel Aviv, June 4

The largest marine defence project in Israel, for the construction of 12 breakwaters on the coastal cliff strip in central Netanya, has come to an end.

190 million Shekels ($66 million) were invested in the project - led by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and managed by the Government Company for the Protection of Mediterranean Coastal Cliffs.

Approximately 3.5 km of expanded cliff beach will soon be opened to the public.

Beyond the engineering aspect, this is a project of broad public significance: it protects the lives of residents and vital infrastructure located on the cliff edge and which could have collapsed or been destroyed suddenly, while at the same time it returns beaches to the public that were previously unusable or inaccessible.

Upon completion of the work, the beaches will be reopened - not only as a recreational space but as an example of how long-term planning succeeds in combining the preservation of infrastructure and the accessibility of a valuable natural resource to the general public.

190 million Shekels for 3.5 km of protected coastline... that's about $19 million per km. In India, we spend crores on coastal projects but rarely see this level of transparency. Would love to know how they managed the environmental impact assessment so efficiently.

As someone working in infrastructure, this is fascinating. Breakwaters are tricky - they need to withstand storms and rising sea levels. $66 million seems reasonable for protecting lives and property. Good on Israel for prioritizing this.

Yeh toh impressive hai! Netanya beach will be amazing. But I wonder - did they consult local fishermen? In India, any coastal development affects fishing communities. Hope they included all stakeholders. 🤔

Attention to detail matters. The way they talk about 'returning beaches to the public' is something many countries forget. Infrastructure isn't just concrete - it's about quality of life. India's coastal projects should take notes on public accessibility.

Climate change and coastal erosion are real threats. This project shows proactive thinking. But India has 7,500 km of coastline - we need similar initiatives in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kerala. Hope our government studies this model. 👏
