Irshad Kamil, Sartaaj to go nostalgic at alma mater Panjab University

Panjab University in Chandigarh will host Lafz Sur Aur Safar, a first-of-its-kind heart-to-heart conversation featuring two of its most celebrated alumni, lyricist Irshad Kamil and internationally acclaimed Sufi singer-poet Satinder Sartaaj, at the Panjab University Convention Centre on July 26.
The event is being organised by the Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA) in collaboration with the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation (CCF). Entry is free, but successful registration is mandatory, a university statement said on Sunday.
Designed as an inspirational conversation rather than a conventional stage programme, Lafz Sur Aur Safar will explore the creative journeys, defining moments and personal experiences that shaped two artists whose work has touched millions. The audience will get a rare opportunity to hear them speak about the stories behind their words, music, struggles and achievements.
Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig said the event will be a unique and inspiring welcome for new students at the PU campus and affiliated colleges. She added that bringing back two distinguished alumni whose journeys continue to motivate generations will strengthen the bond between the university and its alumni and foster meaningful dialogue with students and society.
Kamil is one of India's most acclaimed lyricists and a distinguished PU alumnus. A recipient of the National Film Award for Best Lyrics, he has written some of Hindi cinema's most celebrated songs, including Agar Tum Saath Ho, Kun Faya Kun, Nadaan Parindey, Phir Se Ud Chala, Shayad and Bekhayali. He also penned the Panjab University anthem Shaan-o-Shaukat. His writing is admired for blending literary depth with contemporary expression.
Sartaaj is an internationally celebrated Sufi singer, poet, songwriter and performer, and a noted PU alumnus. Known for seamlessly weaving Punjabi literary traditions with soulful music, he has captivated audiences worldwide through songs such as Sai, Udaarian, Masoomiyat, Main Te Meri Jaan, Ibadat and Rutba. His work has played a significant role in taking Punjabi poetry and Sufi music to audiences across the globe.
The conversation will be moderated by academicians Pushpinder Syal and Archana R. Singh, who will engage the guests in a discussion on literature, music, creativity and the experiences that shaped their artistic journeys.
The programme is open to PU alumni, students of the campus and affiliated colleges, literature lovers, artists and culture enthusiasts from across the tricity and beyond. As two celebrated creative minds revisit the institution where their journeys began, the evening promises thoughtful reflections on literature, music and life.
Seats are limited; early registration is advised. Registration is compulsory, and entry will be permitted only upon successful registration. All attendees must carry a valid identity card for verification at the venue.

As an alumna, this makes me proud. But I wish they'd also invite more female alumni speakers. Kamil and Sartaaj are legends, no doubt, but representation matters too. Still, an excellent initiative to inspire current students.
I studied at PU as an exchange student from Australia and this brings back such fond memories. The campus energy is unmatched. So happy to see the university celebrating its creative talent. Miss those days by the student centre! 🌸
Lafz Sur Aur Safar - what a beautiful name for an event. Satinder Sartaaj's 'Rutba' still gives me chills. And Irshad Kamil's lyrics are pure poetry. This is the kind of event that reminds us why liberal arts education matters, beyond just exams and degrees.

I'm from Patiala but will travel to Chandigarh just for this. Irshad Kamil's 'Agar Tum Saath Ho' is a masterclass in emotion, and Sartaaj's 'Udaarian' is pure soul. Two giants of their craft. Let's hope the conversation is as deep as their work. 🤞
