Iran's supreme leader condemns assassination of IRGC intelligence chief

Iran's Supreme Leader condemns the killing of IRGC intelligence head Majid Khademi, blaming Israel and the US for turning to "terrorism and assassination."

"assassinations and crimes against Iranian leadership will not halt the country's course - Mojtaba Khamenei"

Tehran, April 7

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei extended condolences for a senior general of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, saying that "assassinations and crimes" against Iranian leadership will not halt the country's course.

In a written statement, Khamenei praised Majid Khademi, head of the IRGC's Intelligence Protection Organization, for decades of "silent efforts in the security, intelligence, and defence fields" of Iran, Xinhua news agency reported.

He also accused Israel and the United States of turning to "terrorism and assassination" after "successive defeats." Khademi was killed in Tehran on Monday in an airstrike claimed by Israel.

Khamenei extended condolences to Khademi's family and comrades, as well as the other commanders of the IRGC's Intelligence Organization.

Khademi was appointed as the head of the intelligence organization in June last year following the 12-day war between Iran and Israel, in which Mohammad Kazemi, the organization's former chief, had been killed.

Before his appointment, Khademi served as the head of the IRGC's Intelligence Protection Organization.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi strongly condemned a US and Israeli attack on the Sharif University of Technology in the capital Tehran, which severely damaged the building of its information technology center and a gas substation near the academic center's mosque.

Iran's army said Sunday it has targeted petrochemical industries and petroleum products storage facilities in southern Israel, as well as US equipment depots, satellite communication units and troops in a base in Kuwait.

On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and several other Iranian cities, killing Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders and civilians. Iran responded by launching waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US bases and assets in the Middle East.

This is so far removed from our daily lives in India, but it affects global oil prices and our economy. Hope our government is closely monitoring the situation to protect our national interests and the safety of Indian diaspora in the region. 🙏

The targeting of a university's IT center is unacceptable, no matter the conflict. Education and research hubs should be off-limits. This sets a dangerous precedent. India has historic ties with both Iran and Israel; we must use our diplomatic channels to urge restraint.

Reading this from Mumbai. It's a stark reminder of how fragile peace can be. The article mentions attacks on both sides. There are no winners in such escalations, only innocent civilians who suffer. Hoping for de-escalation soon.

With respect, the article seems to present only one side of the narrative, heavily quoting Iranian leadership. A more balanced report would include statements from Israeli or US defense officials regarding the reasons for such actions. Objective journalism is crucial.

Geopolitical tensions are rising. India's priority should be securing our energy imports and ensuring the safety of sea lanes. The Chabahar Port project with Iran is also strategically vital for us. Our diplomacy needs to be very nuanced here.
