IPL 2026: Delhi LG meets MI and DC players ahead of Saturday's double-header

Delhi LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu interacted with DC and MI players, including Axar Patel and Rohit Sharma, ahead of the IPL 2026 double-header, emphasizing sportsmanship.

"Beyond the competition, sports remain a powerful medium to foster unity and a shared sense of national pride. - LG Delhi"

New Delhi, April 3

Ahead of Saturday's double-header clash between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2026, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu visited the Arun Jaitley Stadium and interacted with players from both sides, extending his best wishes for a spirited contest while highlighting the unifying power of sport and its role in fostering national pride.

"Visited the Arun Jaitley Stadium today and interacted with players ahead of tomorrow's much-anticipated IPL encounter between @DelhiCapitals and @mipaltan. Met @akshar2026, Captain of Delhi Capitals, along with the team, to extend my best wishes for a sportsmanlike and spirited performance as they play their second match of the season at their home ground.

"Also interacted with @ImRo45 and @surya_14kumar from the Mumbai Indians squad. It is always encouraging to see such world-class talent and experience representing the very best of Indian cricket. Beyond the competition, sports remain a powerful medium to foster unity and a shared sense of national pride. May the match be a celebration of true sportsmanship and a thrilling experience for all fans in the National Capital," LG Delhi posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Both teams come after winning their opening encounters.

On Saturday afternoon, it will be more than just another league game in IPL 2026. The first game of the tournament's opening double-header is a high-stakes contest between a side seeking winning consistency at home and a five-time champion side that has historically thrived in New Delhi.

Since 2022, MI have won five of seven encounters between the two sides, including both meetings last season. Even at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, MI have prevailed in three of the last four games against DC.

With the Met Department issuing a yellow alert for Saturday, Axar Patel's men - provided the rain stays away -- will need to script something different to begin their home leg on a high.

DC managed just one home win here in five attempts last season, and the urgency to change that begins now. DC's fortunes with the bat will hinge significantly on KL Rahul, who bagged a golden duck against Lucknow Super Giants.

As a neutral fan, this is the match I'm most excited for this weekend. The history between these teams is intense. MI's record in Delhi is scary for DC fans. Hoping for a last-over thriller!

Respectfully, while it's nice the LG met the teams, I wish our leaders would show the same enthusiasm for improving local sports infrastructure in smaller towns. The IPL is great, but cricket talent comes from everywhere.

MI Paltan here! Our record in Delhi speaks for itself. Ro and Surya bhai will handle business. Just hoping the yellow alert doesn't spoil the party. 🏏💙 #OneFamily

The pressure is squarely on KL Rahul. A golden duck in the first match is not the start you want. He needs to anchor the innings tomorrow, especially if it's a rain-shortened game. All eyes on you, KL!
