"The primary concern for the next five days is a severe heat wave. - India Meteorological Department"

Bhopal, May 13

The India Meteorological Department centre in Bhopal has issued a warning for Madhya Pradesh detailing a complex atmospheric situation characterised by an impending severe heat wave alongside localised thunderstorm activity.

For the immediate evening hours, a moderate thunderstorm with lightning and potential hail, featuring wind speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour, is anticipated over Balaghat and Sheopur Kalan.

Residents in south Mandsaur, Ratlam, Ujjain, Dewas, central Sagar, south Betul, Pandhurna, east Dindori, south Chhindwara, south Seoni, and Singrauli should also prepare for light thunderstorms with lightning.

Over the past 24 hours, light rainfall and gusty winds have been recorded in districts such as Morena, Gwalior, and Bhind, with Alipur and Prithvipur receiving 4 millimetres of rain.

According to the synoptic weather report, a cyclonic circulation currently lies over Jammu at 3.1 kilometres above mean sea level, while another circulation persists over southwest Madhya Pradesh at 0.9 kilometres above mean sea level.

Furthermore, an east-west trough extends from this southwest Madhya Pradesh circulation across to Manipur, and a north-south trough runs from the same region down to south interior Karnataka.

Despite localised storms, the primary concern for the next five days is a severe heat wave.

Health officials have advised the public to stay hydrated by drinking water, oral rehydration solution, or traditional drinks such as lassi and lemon water.

It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities between noon and 3 p.m., wear light-coloured cotton clothing, and ensure children or pets are never left in parked vehicles.

Farmers are encouraged to use light, frequent irrigation and avoid applying fertilisers or pesticides during peak heat hours.

A fresh western disturbance is expected to reach northwest India by May 15, potentially further influencing these weather patterns.

Living in Ujjain, I can confirm the heat is unbearable. Even the evening walks are becoming impossible. But now hearing about thunderstorms with lightning is scary. My grandmother strictly says to avoid going out during thunderstorms. Good advice from health officials about drinking ORS and lassi - that's what we've been doing since childhood. 🙏

I understand the need for weather alerts, but I wish the article had more specific predictions for Bhopal itself. We have no mention of our city in the thunderstorm zones even though I can see dark clouds gathering. The heat wave warning for the next five days is concerning though - my son's exams are ongoing and we can't keep him indoors all day. Please keep us updated!

As a farmer from Sheopur Kalan, this news about potential hailstorms is worrying. Woh toh theek hai ki heat wave ka warning hai, par hailstorm se crop ka nuksaan zyada hota hai (It's fine that there's a heat wave warning, but hailstorms cause more crop damage). The advice about irrigation timing is helpful though. We'll shift watering to early morning. Kisaan ko har mausam se ladna padta hai (Farmers have to fight every weather). 🌪️

Interesting that the cyclonic circulation over Jammu and the trough extending to Manipur is affecting MP weather. Climate patterns are getting weirder every year. The heat wave is definitely real though - I was in Balaghat last week and couldn't step out without an umbrella. Good to see IMD issuing detailed warnings. Only suggestion: please share the forecast in Hindi too for rural areas. 👍
