Instagram changes its wordmark logo after over a decade
New Delhi, August 13
On Thursday, Meta introduced a refreshed Instagram wordmark logo.
The change was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on both Instagram and Threads, where he described the new logo as "sharper and more modern" while still referencing the original and maintaining simplicity, as per TechCrunch.
The new wordmark keeps the familiar script style, with redrawn letterforms.
The last time Instagram updated its design was 2016, when the company moved away from the classic brown camera with the rainbow stripe to the colorful pink gradient that remains the icon today.
"The wordmark at the top of the app hasn't changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh," Instagram head Adam Mosseri wrote in a post on the platform. "Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that's always made it Instagram."
Some liked it, while many found it disappointing.
Many joked that the logo now looks like it reads "Instagzam" because of the shape of the font used for the "r."

Honestly, I think it's fine. The old one was getting outdated, and this feels more fresh. But why does every app need to keep changing its logo? First WhatsApp, then YouTube, now Instagram. Can't they just leave things alone for a while? 🙄
"Instagzam" 😂😂 Classic! The font designer must have had a laugh looking at this. I remember when they changed the icon in 2016 - there was so much backlash. Now this. Meta really knows how to create unnecessary drama. The user experience hasn't improved one bit.
I have a feeling they changed it just so people would talk about Instagram again. Smart marketing? Maybe. But as a designer, I can tell you - this "refresh" is barely noticeable. If you told me this was the same logo from 2014, I'd believe you.
All these years, and Meta still hasn't figured out that Indian users want a better reels algorithm, better shopping features, and better customer support - not just a new font. The "cleaner and more modern" branding is just a distraction from the real issues. 🤷♂️
Bring back the old brown camera icon with the rainbow! That was the real Instagram. Now everything is just gradients and minimalism. This new wordmark looks like something a college student made in a free font editor. 😤
