Indian Coast Guard Conducts First HNS & Oil Spill Training in Andaman

The Indian Coast Guard's Regional Headquarters in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has conducted a pioneering training course on Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) spill management alongside a standard Oil Pollution Preparedness course. The week-long program aimed to enhance the capabilities of Coast Guard personnel, Andaman Command components, and maritime stakeholders in protecting the marine environment. This training directly supports a newly implemented Crisis Management Plan specifically for HNS incidents in the ecologically sensitive island region. The activity coincides with the Coast Guard's 50th-anniversary celebrations, which recently included a large 10K run in Noida to promote fitness and public awareness.

The event was organised as a commemorative activity marking the 50th Raising Day of the Indian Coast Guard.

Participants from different age groups took part in the run, which aimed to promote fitness, community participation and awareness about the role of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding the country's maritime interests.

The Indian Coast Guard celebrated its 50th Raising Day earlier this year on February 1. The milestone marks five decades of the maritime security force's service in protecting India's coastline, conducting search and rescue operations and ensuring maritime safety.

Very important step. With increasing maritime traffic in the Indian Ocean, we need to be prepared for any environmental disaster. Good to see stakeholders being trained together. The HNS plan is a welcome move.

As someone who loves scuba diving in the Andamans, I'm relieved to read this. Coral reefs and marine life are so vulnerable. Hope this training is rigorous and includes regular drills. Prevention is better than cure.

Good work, but I hope this isn't just a one-off course. The real test is maintaining readiness and equipment over the long term. Our islands need constant vigilance. The Coast Guard must ensure these plans are actionable 24/7.
