India to Manufacture AI Data Centre Components Under 'Make in India' Vision

India is advancing its electronics manufacturing with a new facility for AI data centre components. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated Jabil's plant in Maharashtra, aligning with PM Modi's 'Make in India' vision. The move positions India as a global partner in electronics, amid rising AI infrastructure demand. Jabil, a major PLI scheme beneficiary, has invested over Rs 2,000 crore in India.

India to manufacture AI data centre components under 'Make in India, Make for world' vision: Vaishnaw

New Delhi, June 17

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said India is moving towards becoming a trusted global partner in electronics manufacturing, as he inaugurated global manufacturing company Jabil's new advanced manufacturing facility in Maharashtra that will produce components for AI data centres.

The high-tech facility, located at Ranjangaon near Pune, will manufacture components used in artificial intelligence (AI) data centres, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Make in India, Make for the World", Vaishnaw said in a post on social media platform X.

The minister inaugurated the facility along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

"India to be a trusted global partner in everything electronics. Inaugurated Jabil's new advanced manufacturing facility with Maharashtra CM Dev Fadnavis. This high-tech plant will manufacture components of AI data centers, in line with PM Narendra Modi's vision of 'Make in India, Make for the World'," Vaishnaw said.

The development marks another step in India's efforts to strengthen its electronics manufacturing ecosystem and position itself as a key global hub for advanced technology production.

The focus on AI data centre components comes at a time when demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure is rising rapidly across the world.

Jabil has been expanding its manufacturing footprint in India. Last year, Vaishnaw had announced that the global manufacturing company was investing more than Rs 2,000 crore in the country for Silicon Photonics and Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS).

The minister had also said that Jabil's manufacturing plant at Sanand in Gujarat was nearing completion.

Jabil operates more than 100 locations across over 25 countries and employs more than 140,000 people globally.

The company serves some of the world's largest brands across sectors including healthcare, packaging, smartphones, cloud equipment, automotive and home appliances.

The company has also emerged as one of the major beneficiaries under the government's Telecom Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.

According to Department of Telecommunications data, Jabil received Rs 235.87 crore in incentives over two financial years, the highest among the companies covered under the scheme.

This is excellent! But I hope we're not just assembling foreign designs. We need to develop our own AI chips and intellectual property too. Still, step by step we're getting there. The PLI scheme giving Jabil Rs 235 crore is well spent if it builds our ecosystem. Proud moment for Maharashtra! 🌟

Finally some concrete action on AI manufacturing! Jabil is a global giant with 100+ locations worldwide. If they're betting big on India, it means our infrastructure and talent are competitive. The Silicon Photonics investment last year was also smart - optical interconnects are crucial for AI data centers. Well done minister! 👏

Good initiative but we need to ensure the benefits reach local communities in Ranjangaon. Also, the PLI scheme should be more transparent - Rs 235 crore to one company sounds huge. But I'm happy to see India moving up the value chain from assembly to advanced manufacturing. Let's hope this inspires more such investments! 🤞

Amazing! This is exactly what 'Make in India, Make for the World' should look like. Jabil serving Apple, Cisco, and other global brands means our manufacturing quality is world-class. The AI boom needs hardware, and India is positioning itself perfectly. Next step: we need more R&D centers, not just plants. But for now, great progress! 💪

My concern is: will this facility just assemble imported components or actually manufacture them from scratch? 'Components of AI data centers' could mean anything from simple cables to complex processors. We need more clarity.
