Hyderabad Metro facilitates transportation of heart, lungs
Hyderabad, Aug 1
Hyderabad Metro Rail turned into a life-saving corridor as it facilitated transportation of heart and lungs from a donor for transplantation on Saturday.
The Metro enabled priority medical transit from CARE Hospitals, Gachibowli, to KIMS Hospitals, Minister Road, Secunderabad, in just 25 minutes.
The time-sensitive transportation was from Raidurg Metro Station to Rasoolpura Station, a distance of 14 kilometres. The stretch has 13 stations, and the transit took 25 minutes.
The transit was executed through seamless operational coordination, ensuring the timely movement of the donor organs during a critical phase of the transplantation process, said Hyderabad Metro.
This mission was carried out through close coordination between Hyderabad Metro Rail, healthcare professionals and hospital authorities, reinforcing Hyderabad Metro's role in supporting time-critical medical interventions.
L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL) remains committed to supporting emergency healthcare initiatives, extending the role of urban mobility beyond transportation to enable life-saving medical interventions, it said.
Meanwhile, KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, has successfully performed a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old patient from Rajahmundry, marking a significant milestone in minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Hyderabad.
According to Dr Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, the patient, an accountant employed with a prawn export company, had been suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease.
The doctor explained that the mitral valve is located between the left atrium and left ventricle and normally allows blood to flow freely from the upper chamber to the lower chamber of the heart. In mitral stenosis, the valve becomes thickened and narrowed, reducing blood flow and placing strain on the heart. If left untreated, the condition can lead to serious complications and may even become life-threatening.
The complex procedure was performed on July 23 and lasted for more than five hours. According to Dr Nisarga, robotic intracardiac procedures continue to be uncommon in Hyderabad, and robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement remains a relatively rare surgery in the city.

Amazing to see organ donation getting this kind of support! The donor's family deserves immense respect for their decision. This is how a city should function — every minute matters when it comes to saving lives. Also good to see KIMS pushing the boundaries with robotic surgery. Hyderabad healthcare is really stepping up!
In a city like Hyderabad where traffic can be unpredictable, this kind of prioritised movement is a lifesaver. But I wonder — is there a more permanent SOP for these emergency transits? Or do they make it up on the spot every time? We need more of these life-saving corridors, not just during organ donations but also for accidents etc. Good initiative, but let's make it systematic!
This is genuinely uplifting news! The metro is proving it's not just about daily commutes but about being a crucial part of the city's emergency infrastructure. Also, robotic mitral valve replacement at KIMS — that's really advanced stuff! Hyderabad is becoming a medical hub, for sure. 🚇❤️
Sometimes we take our public infrastructure for granted, but this really shows how much thought went into the metro's design. 25 minutes for that route is excellent. Meanwhile, 37-year-old patient getting robotic heart surgery — it's a sign of how far Indian healthcare has come. We should definitely see more such collaborations between public transport and medical institutions.
Genuinely heartwarming to see such initiatives. Kolkata's similar efforts with trams have saved lives too. It's the combination of planning and empathy that makes urban mobility meaningful. The metro isn't just moving people; it's helping save them. Kudos to all involved! 🙌
