'Hope we can save a lot of lives...': Trump ahead of trilateral talks on Ukraine war in Abu Dhabi

Ahead of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, Trump discusses meetings with Zelenskyy, concessions from Putin, and his focus on saving European lives.

"I hope we can save a lot of lives, that's all. - Donald Trump"

Washington DC, January 23

US President Donald Trump is hopeful that the upcoming trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States in the UAE would "help save a lot of lives". Reiterating his claim of having resolved several wars, Trump said that his initiatives are aimed more towards Europe than the US.

Trump made the remarks while speaking to the press on board Air Force One while returning from Davos.

On his conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump said, "We had a conversation. I've had numerous conversations on Ukraine. It would be nice to end the war... it costs us nothing. We make money. I don't want to make money, but we make money. Biden spent $350 billion stupidly and lost a lot of money. But it's not about the money. It's about 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers a month being killed...I've have numrous good meetings with President Zelenskyy. It's funny. I put out a 35-year war in a day, a 32-year war in two days. In other wars, the worst was like four days. But this one goes on and on forever. And actually, they may have been more complex..."

Trump on Thursday held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with the war in Ukraine remaining a key focus of discussions at the summit. According to CNN, the meeting concluded after lasting around an hour.

After the closed-door interaction, Zelenskyy's communications advisor said he had a "good meeting" with Trump in Davos on Thursday.

On the United States, Russia and Ukraine to hold trilateral talks in UAE, the US President added, "Anytime we meet, it's good. If we don't meet, nothing's going to happen. In the first three years, nobody met under Biden... So we are meeting, and we'll see what happens. I hope we can save a lot of lives, that's all."

When asked about the kind of concessions Putin needs to make, Trump said, "Everybody's making concessions to get it done. Europe is going to be a part of it. It's more for Europe than for me. I mean, I'm doing this more for Europe than for me. I'm doing it to save lives. I'm doing it for Europe... It doesn't affect us very much... I have the ability to get things done like this, and we'll see if I can get it done... I thought Putin wanted the whole thing. Maybe he does, but he's not going to be going there unless we don't make a deal..."

Speaking about his recent conversation with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado today, Trump praised Machado and said, "We have a very good relationship. She's a good woman, a very nice woman. She's been through a lot, and at the same time, I'll tell you, they're doing a very good job in Venezuela. So, it's interesting. I get along with both sides. I get along with everybody but the media. The fake news that I don't get along, but I get along with everybody..."

As an Indian, I see this from a different angle. The war has disrupted global food and energy supplies, affecting our economy too. If talks in Abu Dhabi can bring stability, it's good for everyone. But the solution must respect Ukraine's sovereignty. Hoping for a diplomatic breakthrough! 🙏

Trump's statement "It doesn't affect us very much" about the US is telling. For Europe and the rest of the world, it affects us a lot! Fuel prices, wheat exports... everything is connected. Glad India has maintained a balanced position, focusing on dialogue and our national interest.

The most important line is "I hope we can save a lot of lives." Whatever one thinks of Trump, if he can genuinely help broker peace, it's worth a try. The monthly casualty figures he mentions are horrifying. The world needs statesmen right now, not politicians.

His tone is so transactional – "we make money", "costs us nothing". A peace deal shouldn't be a business deal. And constantly comparing himself to Biden weakens his message. The UAE as a venue is interesting though, shows how Gulf states are becoming key mediators.

The part about Europe needing to step up is correct. They are more directly affected and should lead the peace efforts with support. India has always said this conflict can only be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Hope the Abu Dhabi talks yield something concrete. 🤞
