Hope opposition will also support Nari Shakti Adhiniyam: Union Minister Chirag Paswan

Union Minister Chirag Paswan hopes for opposition support as the government plans a special session to amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Act and increase Lok Sabha seats.

"Women have been demanding this... I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and hope the opposition will also support it. - Chirag Paswan"

Patna, April 3

As the Centre plans to bring amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandana Act, Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Friday lauded the BJP government's decision to convene a special session for said legislation, asserting that his party, the LJP, has consistently treated the topic with the utmost seriousness.

"Women have been demanding this, and our party has consistently supported it--even since the time of our late leader Ram Vilas Paswan Ji. We treated the Women's Reservation Bill with seriousness then, and now, with the government calling a special session, I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and hope the opposition will also support it," said Paswan.

Meanwhile, the BJP government plans to reconvene the parliament budget session again in the third week of April, said sources.

The government is planning to bring an amendment bill to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 from 543 seats. The idea is to have at least 273 seats reserved for women.

According to sources, the key agenda may include amendments to the 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Act and the introduction of the Delimitation Commission Bill.

The sources said that the Centre has planned to take the 2011 census as the basis for delimitation and seat redistribution.

Currently, the Lok Sabha has 543 seats. With a proposed 50 per cent increase, the number of seats will rise to 816, with 273 (about a third) reserved for women.

The bill was passed by Parliament in 2023. The base for delimitation had originally been set at the 2011 census. The Delimitation Act will be amended accordingly. The Government is currently building consensus as this legislation will need 2/3rd majority to pass this legislation, making it crucial to secure support from opposition parties.

Increasing Lok Sabha seats to 816 is a massive structural change. Using the 2011 census seems fair for delimitation. The opposition should support this; it's about national progress, not partisan politics.

While the intent for women's reservation is good, I'm concerned about the timing and the huge increase in MPs. Will this not put an enormous financial burden on the exchequer? We need a detailed cost-benefit analysis.

As someone who follows Indian politics, this is a bold move. Building consensus for a 2/3rd majority is the real test. Hope the special session yields results and doesn't get bogged down in procedural delays.

Paswan ji is right to highlight his party's legacy on this. True empowerment is giving women seats at the table where decisions are made. More women in Lok Sabha will change the nature of debates and policies for the better.

The Delimitation Bill based on 2011 census is crucial. It will address the population shifts and ensure fair representation for all states. A bigger Parliament might be what a growing nation of 1.4 billion needs. Jai Hind!
