HM Amit Shah to launch mass tree plantation drive in Ahmedabad today
New Delhi, July 12
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will launch a mass tree plantation campaign in Ahmedabad on Sunday, alongside the inauguration and foundation stone laying of public infrastructure projects worth an estimated Rs 405 crore.
According to the programme schedule released ahead of the visit, Shah will begin the day at 8.30 a.m. at the Science Dome in Science City in the Sola area, where he will formally inaugurate the city-wide plantation campaign under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Mission 'Five Million Trees' initiative.
The public programme will also include the inauguration and foundation stone laying of various development projects being jointly undertaken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) and the Roads and Buildings Department.
The projects being launched and inaugurated amount collectively to around Rs 405 crore and aim to strengthen civic infrastructure across the city.
Following the inaugural event, Shah is scheduled to participate in a series of tree-plantation programmes at various locations in Ahmedabad as part of the mass-plantation campaign.
At 9.30 a.m., he will attend a plantation drive in Thaltej Ward of the Ghatlodia Assembly constituency at the AMC plot located on the Gota-Godhavi Canal in Bhadaj.
The second plantation programme is scheduled for 9.55 a.m. in Sarkhej Ward of the Vejalpur Assembly constituency at an AMC plot near Applewood on S.P. Ring Road in Bopal.
Shah will conclude the morning's plantation events at 10.25 a.m. by attending a tree plantation programme in Stadium Ward of the Naranpura Assembly constituency.
The event will be held at the NDDB plot opposite the Wadaj BRTS corridor near Gandhi Ashram.
The plantation programmes form part of AMC's Mission Five Million Trees campaign, which aims to expand the city's green cover through large-scale community participation.
The civic body, along with AUDA and the Roads and Buildings Department, is also using the occasion to launch multiple public infrastructure projects across Ahmedabad.
Shah, who represents the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency in Parliament, is expected to participate in all four scheduled events during his visit to Gujarat on July 12.

Finally some attention to green cover! I live near Ghatlodia and the pollution has been unbearable. But I hope this isn't just a one-day event - we need sustained planting and care. Also, glad to see Rs 405 crore for infrastructure, but I wish some of that went to cleaning up our rivers too.
I'm from the US but visited Ahmedabad last year. The city has so much potential but desperately needs more green spaces. This seems like a smart move - combining tree planting with infrastructure upgrades. Hope they involve local communities in maintaining the trees long-term.
Good initiative but I have mixed feelings. We've seen so many plantation drives where saplings die within months due to neglect. The AMC needs a proper maintenance plan - water supply, protection from grazing, etc. Otherwise it's just waste of taxpayer money. Hope this time it's different!
I live in the UK but my family is from Ahmedabad. This is wonderful news! Indian cities are becoming concrete jungles. The Mission Five Million Trees could be a game-changer if done right. Love that they're involving multiple locations across the city - makes it more inclusive. 👏
I appreciate the effort but wish our leaders focused more on implementing existing environmental laws rather than symbolic launches. The Rs 405 crore for infrastructure is good, but what about the illegal constructions on our lakes and green belts? Anyway, better late than never for tree planting!
