Himachal Chief Secretary reviews monsoon preparedness, directs all districts to stay on high alert

Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Kamlesh Kumar Pant on Wednesday chaired a virtual high-level review meeting with all Deputy Commissioners to assess the prevailing monsoon situation in the state and directed district administrations to remain on the highest level of alert in view of heavy rainfall and related disasters.
The meeting reviewed the overall monsoon scenario across Himachal Pradesh, including rain-induced incidents, relief and restoration measures, road connectivity, electricity and drinking water supply, and the preparedness of district administrations.
Deputy Commissioners briefed the Chief Secretary on the situation in their respective districts and the steps being taken to minimise the impact of monsoon-related disasters.
Pant instructed all Deputy Commissioners to maintain a high level of preparedness and ensure a swift response to emergencies arising from heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts and other monsoon-related incidents.
He asked district administrations to keep a close watch on vulnerable locations and maintain seamless coordination with the State Government and all concerned departments.
The Chief Secretary also directed officials to ensure the prompt restoration of disrupted essential services, including roads, power supply, drinking water schemes and communication networks.
He stressed the need for timely dissemination of weather forecasts and public advisories to enhance public awareness and reduce the risk to life and property.
Reiterating the government's commitment to disaster management, Pant said the State Government remains fully committed to safeguarding public safety and minimising the impact of monsoon-related disasters through coordinated efforts of all departments and district administrations.
He added that every effort should be made to minimise the loss of life, public property and essential infrastructure during the ongoing monsoon season.

Every year we hear the same instructions but last year in Kullu, many roads were still closed for days after rain. Preparedness needs to translate into actual on-ground work, not just virtual meetings. Still, let's hope this time is different.
As someone from Shimla, I appreciate the emphasis on drinking water supply. Last year we had water shortages for a week after landslides damaged pipelines. Timely restoration of basic amenities is crucial. Hope Deputy Commissioners take this seriously. 🌧️
This is good but the real test will be when heavy rain actually hits. In Himachal, weather can change in minutes - cloudbursts, flash floods. Coordination between SDMs, BDOs and local volunteers needs to be drilled, not just discussed in meetings. Still, nice to see proactiveness from the Chief Secretary.
Excellent that weather forecasts and public advisories are being emphasised. So many lives were lost in 2023 because people didn't get timely warnings in remote villages. Now with good mobile coverage in most parts of the state, real-time alerts can make a huge difference. Let's act on this.
