Heavy rain likely in parts of TN over next three days: IMD

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu over the next three days, with the Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni districts likely to receive intense showers towards the end of the week.
The weather agency has attributed the change in conditions to a weak trough prevailing in the lower levels of the atmosphere along the Tamil Nadu coast.
According to the IMD, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected at one or two places across north coastal Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats districts, and Puducherry on Tuesday.
Similar weather conditions are likely to continue in parts of the Western Ghats on Wednesday and Thursday, with moderate rain and thunderstorms expected at isolated locations. The rainfall activity is expected to intensify from July 30.
The IMD has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris district, while moderate rainfall is likely over other Western Ghats districts. Light showers are also expected in isolated areas across the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. On July 31, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Theni districts. Moderate rain is expected in other Western Ghats districts, while light rainfall may occur in isolated places across the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The forecast indicates that the wet spell will continue on August 1. Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Theni are again expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Moderate showers are also likely over interior Tamil Nadu, north coastal districts, Puducherry and Karaikal, while other parts of the state may witness light rain.
The IMD said moderate rainfall is likely to persist over the Western Ghats districts and north coastal Tamil Nadu in the following days, with light rain expected elsewhere in the state.
The weather agency has also said there is unlikely to be any significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until July 31. However, temperatures at a few places could remain 2 degrees to 4 degrees Celsius above normal, while the rest of the state is expected to record temperatures close to seasonal averages.
For Chennai, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies on Tuesday and Wednesday. Light rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in a few parts of the city. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 38 degrees and 39 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain between 29 degrees and 30 degrees Celsius.

My relatives in Coimbatore are already preparing for the downpour. They said the soil is loose from last month's rain, so hoping it doesn't get too intense. IMD has been accurate lately, so taking this seriously.
Typical July weather for TN. But 2-4°C above normal in some places is concerning. Climate change is real, yaar. We need more tree planting drives in cities like Chennai.

I'm visiting Puducherry next week. Hope the weather clears up by then. The forecast says light showers, so shouldn't spoil the trip. At least it won't be as hot as Chennai! 😅
One thing I appreciate about IMD is they give district-level forecasts now. Makes planning easy for farmers and travellers. Just wish they were more precise about timing—my area in Chennai always gets missed! 🌦️
