PM Modi felicitates 98-year-old BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar in Kolkata. Family expresses joy as his decades of service and sacrifices are recognized.

"He worked with Shyama Prasad Mukherjee for the party. I loved him deeply and saw his dedication... - Manik Sarkar"

Siliguri, May 9

Family members of veteran BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar on Saturday expressed "immense joy" after Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured him and said the recognition was a tribute to his decades of dedication and sacrifices for the party.

Daughter-in-Law of Makhanlal Sarkar, Minu Sarkar, told ANI, "... It's a historic day. After years of my father's dedication to the party, the Prime Minister has honoured him. No words can describe it. It is a day of immense joy. My father gave decades of service, and I witnessed his sacrifices. To see the Prime Minister

Elder son Manik Sarkar recalled that said his father was once arrested for "singing the national anthem" when RSS was banned.

"... It feels great. I am proud that my father has been honoured by the Prime Minister. He worked with Shyama Prasad Mukherjee for the party. I loved him deeply and saw his dedication... He was once arrested for singing the national anthem at a time when awareness was limited, and the RSS was banned. Today, at 97, he lives a simple life," he told ANI

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated and took blessings from senior BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground during the swearing-in ceremony in West Bengal.

At the age of 98, Sarkar remains one of the early grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India.

In 1952, he was arrested in Kashmir while accompanying Syama Prasad Mukherjee during the movement to hoist the Indian tricolour there.

After the formation of the BJP in 1980, he became the organisational coordinator for West Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling districts. Within just one year, he helped enrol nearly 10,000 members.

From 1981 onward, he served continuously for seven years as district president, an exceptional achievement at a time when BJP leaders generally could not remain in the same organisational position for more than two years.

I'm not a BJP supporter, but stories like this make you think. The sacrifices of old workers who kept the ideology alive during tough times, like when RSS was banned, deserve recognition. Getting arrested for singing the national anthem—that's dedication. It's good the PM took time to honour him, even if politics aside.

Makhanlal Sarkar ji's story is inspiring for today's youth. Working from the grassroots, helping enrol 10,000 members in just one year, serving as district president for seven consecutive years—that's a model of service. The PM's gesture shows he values the old guard who built the party from scratch. Bohut badhai! 🚩

Interesting to read about the history of grassroots politics in India. The part about Sarkar being arrested while accompanying Syama Prasad Mukherjee to hoist the tricolour in Kashmir in 1952 is historically significant. It reminds us of the long struggle for national integration that often gets overlooked in today's polarized debates.

This is a feel-good story, but I must say—while honouring party loyalists is nice, the real test is whether the government's policies benefit ordinary citizens. Makhanlal ji's sacrifices for the party are admirable, no doubt. But I hope the PM also recognizes workers from other fields—teachers, farmers, healthcare workers who never get such limelight.

Ye to bahut purani yaadon ko taza kar deta hai. My grandfather also used to tell stories of party workers from the 1950s who faced jail for their beliefs
