Gujarat: HM Amit Shah to lead tree plantation programmes tomorrow
Gandhinagar, July 11
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will launch a mass tree plantation campaign in Ahmedabad on Sunday, alongside the inauguration and foundation stone laying of public infrastructure projects worth an estimated Rs 405 crore.
According to the programme schedule released ahead of the visit, Shah will begin the day at 8.30 a.m. at the Science Dome in Science City in the Sola area, where he will formally inaugurate the city-wide plantation campaign under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Mission 'Five Million Trees' initiative.
The public programme will also include the inauguration and foundation stone laying of various development projects being jointly undertaken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) and the Roads and Buildings Department.
The projects being launched and inaugurated amount collectively to around Rs 405 crore and aim to strengthen civic infrastructure across the city.
Following the inaugural event, Shah is scheduled to participate in a series of tree-plantation programmes at various locations in Ahmedabad as part of the mass-plantation campaign.
At 9.30 a.m., he will attend a plantation drive in Thaltej Ward of the Ghatlodia Assembly constituency at the AMC plot located on the Gota-Godhavi Canal in Bhadaj.
The second plantation programme is scheduled for 9.55 a.m. in Sarkhej Ward of the Vejalpur Assembly constituency at an AMC plot near Applewood on S.P. Ring Road in Bopal.
Shah will conclude the morning's plantation events at 10.25 a.m. by attending a tree plantation programme in Stadium Ward of the Naranpura Assembly constituency.
The event will be held at the NDDB plot opposite the Wadaj BRTS corridor near Gandhi Ashram.
The plantation programmes form part of AMC's Mission Five Million Trees campaign, which aims to expand the city's green cover through large-scale community participation.
The civic body, along with AUDA and the Roads and Buildings Department, is also using the occasion to launch multiple public infrastructure projects across Ahmedabad.
Shah, who represents the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency in Parliament, is expected to participate in all four scheduled events during his visit to Gujarat on July 12.

Impressive to see Rs 405 crore invested in civic infrastructure alongside tree plantations. This is the kind of holistic development that makes a real difference - better roads, drainage, and greener neighborhoods. The Sardar Patel Ring Road area needs these improvements.
Finally some good news on environment from our leaders. But I hope they also focus on cleaning the Sabarmati river which is in such bad shape near Gandhi Ashram area. Trees are good but water bodies need attention too. Overall a step in right direction though 👍
As a resident near the NDDB plot in Wadaj, I'm really happy to see this plantation drive. That area gets very hot in summers because of all the concrete. Hope they choose local trees like neem and banyan - not just decorative ones. Also, need to ensure local communities are involved in maintenance.
It's great to see mass tree plantation campaigns like Mission Five Million Trees. Having lived in Ahmedabad for 5 years now, I can tell you the city desperately needs more green cover. But I hope the RTI activists and media will track how many of these saplings actually survive after one year. Transparency matters.
With all due respect to HM Shah ji, this feels like a photo-op event to me. Real change needs consistency. Why just one day? Why not a sustained campaign throughout the monsoon season? Also, what about the trees that were cut for road widening projects in the same areas? Let's be honest about our efforts.
