Gujarat BJP MLA Govind Parmar dies, party leaders mourn his death
Anand, March 6
Govind Parmar, the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from the Umreth constituency in Gujarat's Anand district, died on Friday while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
He was 82. Parmar had been unwell and was receiving treatment at the hospital in Anand, where he breathed his last, according to party leaders.
News of his death prompted condolences from political leaders and BJP workers across the state, particularly in Anand district and the Umreth region he represented in the Gujarat Assembly.
Born in 1943, Parmar came from a modest background and was regarded as a grassroots political figure with strong links to rural communities in the Charotar region.
He studied up to Class 7 before dedicating his life to public service and politics.
Parmar was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from the Umreth constituency in the 2017 elections, defeating Congress candidate Kapilaben Chavda by a margin of 1,883 votes to secure his maiden term in the House.
He retained the seat in the 2022 Assembly elections as the BJP candidate, defeating Jayant Patel of the Nationalist Congress Party by 26,717 votes after polling 95,639 votes.
The Umreth Assembly constituency in Anand district had earlier witnessed frequent shifts between political parties and was considered to be a tough one before Parmar's victory in 2017.
Reacting to the news, state BJP President and MLA Jagdish Vishwakarma expressed grief over Parmar's passing.
"Heartfelt sorrow on hearing the news of the sad demise of Umreth's popular MLA Govindbhai Parmar. I pray that the Almighty grants peace to his divine soul and gives strength to the bereaved family to bear this loss," Vishwakarma said in a statement.
Parmar's political career was marked by his association with grassroots politics and his close engagement with local communities.
Party workers in Anand district and the Umreth area mourned his death and paid tributes to the late legislator.
He is survived by his family. His death leaves the Umreth Assembly seat vacant.

Very sad news. He was a respected figure in Charotar region. The fact that he turned Umreth into a strong seat for BJP shows his hard work and connection with voters. May his soul rest in peace.
While it's always sad to lose a public servant, his age was 82. Perhaps it's time for political parties, across the board, to encourage more younger candidates with fresh energy for active roles. Respect to his service, but succession planning is important.
Heartfelt condolences from someone who has lived in Anand district. Leaders like Govindbhai who understand rural issues are rare. His victory margin increasing from ~1,800 to over 26,000 votes speaks volumes about his work.
A great loss for Umreth constituency. He was always accessible to the common people. Now the big question is who will fill this vacuum? The by-election will be very interesting to watch.
His story from a humble beginning to becoming a two-time MLA is the real 'Indian dream'. Politics needs more such self-made people. Om Shanti Govindbhai. Your service will be remembered.
