GT Set Unwanted Records in IPL 2026 Final Loss to RCB

Gujarat Titans set several unwanted records in the IPL 2026 final against RCB, including their top three being dismissed in the powerplay for the fourth time this season. The team waited until the 13th over for their first six, the longest such wait in the tournament this year. A 40-ball gap between boundaries set a new record for an IPL final. Washington Sundar's fifty was the only bright spot in GT's total of 155/8.

GT register unflattering records after disappointing show against RCB in final

Ahmedabad, May 31

Gujarat Titans established some unflattering records to their name with a disappointing batting display in the final of the Indian Premier League 2026 against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The collapse of GT's top three of skipper Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler led to their fall, and it was a fifty from Washington Sundar which took GT to 155/8 at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

It was for the fourth time this season that GT's top three were sent packing within the powerplay, with three of these instances coming against RCB itself.

Also, the Titans took a very long time to hit a six. Arshad Khan's six against Krunal Pandya over mid-wicket in the fourth ball of the 13th over marked the longest instance of a team waiting to hit their first six of the innings during this season.

Arshad's six was also the first boundary shot scored by a GT batter since Nishant Sindhu's four against Rasikh Salam in the sixth over. It led to a gap of 40 balls between two boundaries, the longest gap between a boundary in an IPL final.

However, GT can take one positive as sub-160 totals have been defended four times in an IPL final, thrice by MI (in 2013, 2017 and 2019 finals) and once by Deccan Chargers in the 2009 final. The lowest successful total in an IPL 2026 game has been 159/6 by Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow.

Washington (50 in 37 balls, with five fours) and Nishant Sindhu (20 in 18 balls, with three fours) were the only batters to cross the 20-run mark in GT's innings as Rasikh Salam Dar (3/27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29) and Josh Hazlewood (2/39) got the wickets.

Sad to see GT struggling like this. But honestly, RCB's bowling lineup is world-class this year—Hazlewood, Bhuvi, and Rasikh have been exceptional throughout the season. GT's top three failing in the powerplay for the fourth time against RCB itself shows they've been figured out. Hats off to RCB's planning! 🏆👏

This is exactly why powerplay batting is so crucial in T20. GT kept losing wickets early and then couldn't attack during the middle overs. Arshad Khan's six in the 13th over being their first six is just embarrassing for a team that made the final. Management needs to rethink their batting strategy next season.

Let's not forget that sub-160 totals have been defended in IPL finals before! GT still bowlers are capable, and if they can restrict RCB, 155 could be competitive. But honestly, RCB are on a different level this season—they defended the title like true champions. Washington Sundar's fifty was the only silver lining for GT. 🇮🇳👍

As someone who watches IPL every year, GT's batting today felt like a throwback to the 2010s when teams could never recover from early wickets. Arshad Khan's six in the 13th over being the first is a record no team wants. RCB's bowlers executed their plans perfectly. Credit to Rasikh Salam Dar—3/27 is a brilliant performance in a final!

One of the most one-sided powerplay performances I've seen in a final. GT's
