Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the top leadership of the Congress party for naming him a candidate from the Jorhat Constituency in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

In a post on X, Gogoi thanked the Congress leadership for their continued "guidance and belief" in his abilities.

"I am grateful to Congress President Shri @kharge ji , CPP Chairperson Smt Sonia Gandhi ji, LOP Shri @RahulGandhi ji, Chairperson @priyankagandhi ji, GSO @kcvenugopalmp ji and GS @JitendraSAlwar ji , members of the CEC for their continued guidance and belief in my abilities," he said.

Expressing gratitude to the people of Jorhat, Gogoi said, "I am grateful to the people of Jorhat Lok Sabha without whom I would not have reached this position."

He also remembered his father, the former Assam CM, Tarun Gogoi and said, "I am thankful to my late father Tarun Gogoi who taught me what it means to be an Assamese and a Congressman."

Further, expressing gratitude to everyone who supported him, the Congress leader said, "I am also thankful to my family, my mother, sister, wife and two little kids who have endured a lot but always with grace, joy and dignity. To my fellow Congress brothers, sisters, colleagues and elders, the time is now to take Assam in a new and bold direction."

This comes after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday announced its list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections. A total of 42 candidates have been selected by the party's Central Election Committee to contest various constituencies across the state.

According to an official release, the list includes Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi (Jorhat), Bitupan Saikia (Golaghat), Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar from Gauripur, Markline Marak from Goalpara West (ST), Girish Baruah from Bongaigaon, Mahananda Sarkar from Barpeta (SC), and Ramen Singh Rabha from Boko-Chaygaon (ST).

Other prominent names are Satyabrat Kalita (Kamalpur), Ripun Bora (Barchalla), Mira Borthakur Goswami (Dispur), Diganta Barman (Barkhetri), Uptal Gogoi (Sonari), Ajoy Kumar Gogoi (Demow), Debabrata Saikia (Nazira), and Ashok Kumar Sarma (Nalbari).

Several female leaders have also been fielded, including Nandita Das (Hajo-Sualkuchi SC), Pallabi Saikia Gogoi (Teok), and Suruchi Roy (Ram Krishana Nagar SC).

The list features several candidates representing Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes constituencies.

The announcement was signed by KC Venugopal, General Secretary of AICC, and officially released for publication, confirming the candidates' nomination ahead of the crucial state polls.

Jorhat is a prestigious seat. Tarun Gogoi saab was a giant. The son has big shoes to fill. Let's see if he can deliver development or just rely on the family name. Best of luck to all candidates anyway!

Acknowledging his family's support is touching. Being in politics is hard on families. Hope the "new and bold direction" he talks about includes concrete plans for tea garden workers and flood management. Assam needs urgent attention.
