Google has introduced a new feature in its Gemini app that lets users preview and edit AI-generated files directly within the chat. Google Gemini update: Users can now edit AI-generated files directly in chat

Washington, October 30

Google has introduced a new feature in its Gemini app that allows users to preview and edit AI-generated files directly within the chat, eliminating the need to download or export documents before making changes.

As per GSM Arena, the update expands Gemini's existing file-generation capabilities, which were introduced in April and enabled users to create files in formats such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, PDFs and Markdown.

With the latest addition, users can now make changes to documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and other supported files without leaving the Gemini app.

Users can expand generated files to full-screen view and edit their contents directly. They can also highlight specific sections of text to ask questions about them, request that Gemini refine text or visuals, and ask follow-up questions while working on the file.

However, the new editing experience has some platform limitations. PDF preview and editing are available on both the web and mobile versions of Gemini. Support for other formats, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code, is currently limited to the web version.

Google said the new capabilities are available to all Gemini users starting today. The rollout supports every language available in the Gemini app.

The update makes it easier for users to move from generating content to refining it within a single conversation, reducing the need to switch between the Gemini app and external editing tools.

Reader’s Guide · AI-assisted, based only on the report above

What the report makes clear: Google has added in-chat editing for AI-generated files in Gemini, with PDF support on web and mobile and other formats on web only.

Still open: The report does not yet say how editing behaves offline, whether version history is kept, or what data Google retains from edited files.

Another way to look at it: Faster in-chat editing may reduce use of dedicated document tools, which matters for teams with strict file-control policies.

Would in-chat file editing change how you use AI assistants for work documents?
