Glacier collapse incident in Kanchan Ganga area near Badrinath, no damage reported
Kanchan Ganga, May 24
A glacier collapse incident occurred on Sunday in the Kanchan Ganga area near Badrinath Dham. No damage or casualties have been reported.
According to administrative sources, glaciers in high-altitude regions begin melting rapidly as temperatures rise in the area. Such situations are witnessed every year during the summer season due to the increasing heat.
Reports suggest that the glacier located above Kanchan Ganga also gradually shifted downward because of rising temperatures, and parts of it break off and descended downhill.
Officials confirmed that the glacier collapse did not cause any damage in nearby areas.
Meanwhile, in an incident on Friday, one person was killed and a man of Nepali origin was injured after a landslide hit Sonprayag in Uttarakhand.
The incident occurred on Friday morning near the Hanuman Barrier in the Sonprayag area of Rudraprayag district.
"At around 8 AM today, near the Hanuman Temple in Sonprayag, where a police barrier is also situated, a sudden landslide occurred from the nearby hills. Two individuals were caught in the landslide: one was a local resident, and the other was of Nepali origin. They were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where the local resident was declared dead, while the person of Nepali origin was referred to a higher medical centre for further treatment," Nandan Singh Rajwar, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), Rudraprayag said. Good to hear that there's no damage, but the authorities should increase monitoring of such glaciers, especially before the Char Dham Yatra season. With rising temperatures, we're seeing more such events in the Himalayas. The incident in Sonprayag is tragic—sad to hear about the loss of life due to the landslide. My condolences to the family.
Happy to hear no one was hurt in the glacier collapse. It's a good reminder that climate change is affecting the Himalayan region significantly. I hope the Indian government is implementing better early warning systems and landslide monitoring. The Sonprayag incident shows how unpredictable these disasters can be.
This is a wake-up call—melting glaciers are no joke for a country like India that relies so heavily on Himalayan rivers for water and hydropower. The government needs to invest in better infrastructure to protect pilgrims and locals during yatra seasons. The landslide at Sonprayag is particularly concerning as it happened right near a temple and police barrier.
While I'm relieved there's no damage from the glacier collapse, I'm concerned about the increasing frequency of such incidents. The authorities should create better evacuation plans for high-altitude areas. Also, the Sonprayag landslide tragedy—losing one life is one too many. We need more comprehensive disaster management in these regions.
Thank God no damage! 🙌 But this is a serious reminder about climate change. We can't ignore the impact on our Himalayan glaciers. The Sonprayag incident is heartbreaking—one death and one injured. The authorities should have better measures in place to protect people in these vulnerable zones.
