Ghibran: 'Draupathi 2' let me explore unique musical domains!

Composer Ghibran discusses the profound challenge and creative exploration of scoring the period film 'Draupathi 2', set in 14th-century Tamil Nadu.

"Travelling back in time to create music beyond our era proved profoundly challenging. - Ghibran"

Chennai, Jan 22

One of Tamil cinema's top music directors, Ghibran, has now said that his score for director Mohan G Kshatriyan's eagerly awaited period film 'Draupathi 2' let him explore unique musical domains.

During an interaction, music composer Ghibran, whose discography consistently leaves music lovers awestruck, admitted scoring music for the historical, period film was challenging.

Ghibran said, "Travelling back in time to create music beyond our era proved profoundly challenging. 'Draupathi 2' transcends routine war drama, embodying our people's emotional and cultural values, pain, poetry, romance, revenge and patriotism. This project let me explore unique musical domains, reminding me of my work with Kamal Haasan sir in 'Uthama Villain'. I had a big responsibility with regard to the background score for the film which has brilliant visuals shot by Philip K Sundar."

Produced by Chola Chakravarthy of Netaji Productions in association with G. M Film Corporation, 'Draupathi 2' has triggered huge interest among fans.

The film is set in the 14th century and unfolds against the backdrop of the rule of Hoysala emperor Veera Vallalar III, the valour and resistance of the Kadavarayas of Sendhamangalam, and the turbulent shifts triggered by the Mughal invasion of Tamil Nadu.

Apart from Richard Rishi and Rakshana Induchoodan who play the lead, actor and cinematographer Natti Natraj will be seen essaying a key role.

The film will also feature actors Y. G. Mahendran, Nadodigal Barani, Saravana Subbiah, Vela Ramamoorthy, Siraj Johnny, Dinesh Lamba, Ganesh Gaurang, Divi, Devayani Sharma, and Arunodayan, further strengthening the film's historical scale and dramatic presence.

Director Mohan G Kshatriyan, during an interview to IANS earlier, had said that 'Draupathi 2' would start off from 'Draupathi', the first part of the franchise. "The duration of this film is 2 hours and 39 minutes. Of this, only eight to nine minutes of the story happens in 2025, the remaining happens in the 14th century," the director had disclosed.

Mohan G Kshatriyan said that the inspiration for the screenplay came from a small book called Moondram Vallalla Maharaja by a historian called Annal Kandar.

"The prime historical events shown in the film are all based on facts. However, we have used cinematic liberties while developing characters. It took me almost a year to complete the script as I had to meet a lot of people to learn about this subject. The third Veera Vallalalar ruled with Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu as his capital," he explained.

The film boasts of a good technical team as well. It's Telugu dialogues have been penned by Samrat, while Ghibran Vaibodha has scored the music.

Cinematography for the film is by Philip R. Sundar and Thanika Tony is in charge of choreography.

Stunts for the film have been choreographed by Action Santosh while editing is by Devaraj. Art direction has been done by Kamalnathan.

Historical films are tricky. Glad to see they did research based on a historian's book. But I hope the "cinematic liberties" don't distort our history too much. The Mughal invasion period is sensitive. Fingers crossed for an authentic portrayal.

As someone from Tamil Nadu, it's great to see a film focusing on the Hoysalas and Kadavarayas. Our local history is so rich and often ignored by mainstream cinema. Hope this film does justice to the valour of Sendhamangalam. Jai Hind!

The technical team looks stellar! Action Santosh for stunts, Ghibran for music... this is a powerhouse. The runtime is quite long though—2 hours 39 minutes. Hope the story keeps the pace up. The first part was good, expectations are high for this one.

Ghibran comparing it to 'Uthama Villain'? That's a big statement! That soundtrack was magical. If he's exploring unique domains, we are in for a treat. Also, casting YG Mahendran sir is always a win. His presence adds so much weight.

I appreciate that the director spent a year on research. But I have a small criticism: the title 'Draupathi 2' is a bit misleading if only 8-9 minutes are in the present. Maybe they should have chosen a more period-appropriate name? Still, the content sounds promising.
