"Fully prepared": Kamakhya Temple authorities finalize arrangements for Assam's Ambubachi Mela 2026
Guwahati, June 20
Ahead of the much-anticipated Ambubachi Mela 2026 at the historic Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hills, Priest Himadri Sarma on Saturday said all necessary preparations have been completed to facilitate devotees while maintaining the sanctity of the spiritual atmosphere.
Talking to ANI, Sarma said, "With just 1 day left, we, along with the Assam govt, are fully prepared. We are managing every aspect, including facilities for the devotees and temple arrangements, we ask everyone to maintain the sanctity of the spiritual atmosphere."
The four-day festival will begin on the night of June 22 and continue till the morning of June 26, drawing lakhs of devotees, including saints, sadhus, tantric practitioners, and pilgrims from across India and abroad. Authorities, along with the Assam government and temple administration, are making extensive arrangements to manage the anticipated massive footfall.
As per tradition, the Doloi (head priest) of Maa Kamakhya Devalaya said the festival marks the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, symbolising fertility, creation, and the power of the divine feminine.
The ritual schedule includes Pravritti (closure of the sanctum) on June 22 at 9:08 PM, after which the temple doors will be closed for devotees. The sanctum sanctorum will remain closed for three days--June 23, 24, and 25.
"Preparations for the Ambubachi Mela 2026 are in the final phase. We are expecting a large number of devotees, and all necessary arrangements are being put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of rituals and darshan as per tradition. The temple will follow the scheduled Pravritti and Nivritti rituals, and devotees will be able to have darshan and receive the sacred prasad after the temple reopens," Sarma said.
The temple will reopen with Nivritti at sunrise on June 26, following purification rituals and Nitya Puja, after which devotees will be allowed darshan and the distribution of the sacred 'rakta bastra' prasad.
Meanwhile, devotees and sadhus have already begun arriving in large numbers at the temple complex, marking the start of the grand annual observance.

As a devotee who has attended before, I must say the arrangements are better each year. But one request—please ensure better sanitation facilities near the Nilachal Hills base; last year it was a bit chaotic. Otherwise, the spiritual energy there is unmatched. 🌸
This is fascinating from a cultural perspective—I'm visiting from Canada and had no idea about this tradition. The concept of revering the divine feminine through nature is beautiful. Hope the festival brings peace to all attending.
हर हर माँ कामाख्या! The Ambubachi Mela is one of the few places where the connection between spirituality and nature is felt so deeply. I applaud the temple authorities and Assam government for their coordination. May the Divine Mother bless everyone. #Ambubachi2026
I've read about this festival in academic papers on Tantric traditions. It's incredible how the rituals have been preserved for centuries. Would love to attend one day, though I imagine the crowds are intense! Best wishes to everyone organising and participating.
Honestly, I appreciate the preparations but I hope the administration also focuses on crowd control and safety of women devotees especially. With lakhs gathering, proper barricading and emergency services are a must. Still, the devotion at Kamakhya is something else—always a spiritual high.
