French Open: Rafael Jodar storms into second round with dominant debut win
Paris, May 25
Rafael Jodar made a strong impression on the biggest clay-court stage with a commanding win in his French Open debut. He defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 in just one hour and 34 minutes on Monday at Roland Garros.
The 19-year-old Spaniard came to Paris with great momentum from a successful European clay season. He quickly matched the hype surrounding him with a bold first-round performance. This marked the first time he was seeded at a Grand Slam tournament in his young career. Jodar dominated Kovacevic with relentless aggression from the baseline and controlled the match from the very first game.
This victory boosted Jodar's impressive clay-court record for the 2026 season to 16 wins and three losses. His remarkable rise has made him one of the standout young players on the ATP Tour this year.
At the start of the season, Jodar ranked No. 168 in the world, but he has climbed to a career-high No. 29 in the ATP Rankings due to his breakout year. His rapid rise includes winning his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech and reaching the quarterfinals in the Masters events in Madrid and Rome.
Against Kovacevic, Jodar displayed the confidence and maturity that have characterized his rise. Kovacevic entered the match after reaching the semifinals in Hamburg as a lucky loser last week, but he struggled to handle Jodar's intensity and shot-making in their first ATP Tour encounter.
Jodar quickly took the first two sets, giving up only one game, before finishing the third set with little trouble. This established one of the most convincing performances in the opening round.
Next, Jodar will face James Duckworth, who advanced after Gabriel Diallo retired while trailing 6-1, 4-1.
In the bottom half of the draw, fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta caused an upset by defeating 12th seed Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3
Potential future opponent Alex Michelsen also won easily with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Aleksandr Shevchenko. He will now meet wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy, who shocked seventh seed Taylor Fritz on Sunday.

As an Indian tennis fan, I'm always amazed by the depth of Spanish tennis. They keep producing these young stars. Jodar's rise from 168 to 29 in just a few months is inspirational. Hope our players like Nagal and Bhambri can take note of this intensity. Also, nice to see Nishesh Basavareddy making waves - Indian-American talent shining through! 🇮🇳
Impressive performance but let's not get carried away. Kovacevic is not a top-50 player, and we've seen many youngsters dominate early rounds only to fade later. However, credit where due - winning Marrakech and reaching Masters quarterfinals at 19 is no joke. The real test will be against Duckworth and then maybe Michelsen. Exciting times for men's tennis! 🏆
This kid is the real deal. I've been following his junior career and the transition to ATP has been seamless. His clay court record of 16-3 this season is phenomenal. The way he moves on clay reminds me of a young Nadal - obviously not at that level yet, but the footwork is exceptional. Could we be seeing the start of another Spanish dynasty?
Great to see young talent making waves! But I'm equally excited about Nishesh Basavareddy's upset over Taylor Fritz. That's huge for Indian tennis fans. We might finally have someone who can break into the top 100 and stay there. The future of tennis looks bright with these young guns. Hope to see a Jodar vs Basavareddy match - that would be electric! 💪
