Football: Vasco sign Argentine forward Colidio
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 8
Vasco da Gama has reached an agreement with River Plate to sign Argentine forward Facundo Colidio, the Brazilian club has said.
The 26-year-old agreed to a contract that runs until December 2029 after undergoing a medical in Rio de Janeiro.
Vasco confirmed the news on Friday on social media along with a photo of Colidio wearing the club's black and white shirt, reports Xinhua.
Local media reported that Vasco will pay 4.5 million U.S. dollars for 50 percent of the attacker's economic rights, with an option to purchase the remaining 50 percent.
Colidio made 86 appearances for River Plate across all competitions following his 2023 move from Inter Milan.
The move comes a few weeks after Vasco appointed Pedro Emanuel as their new manager. The 51-year-old signed a deal that runs until December 2027 and will be joined by assistant coaches Rui Gomes and Pedro Correia.
"The coach will begin working on Saturday to accompany the daily activities and will hold his first press conference on Monday," Vasco said in a statement.
Emanuel replaces Renato Gaucho, who was sacked last month after a poor run of results. His previous managerial experience includes spells at Coimbra, Estoril, Almeria, Al-Ain and Al-Nassr, among other clubs.
Four-time Brazilian champion Vasco are in a battle to avoid relegation, having secured 20 points from the first 18 games of the season.
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama (Vasco da Gama Club of Rowing), which started as a rowing club before building itself into a multi-sport club, is now mostly known for its men's football team, which currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system, and in the Campeonato Carioca, the state of Rio de Janeiro's premier state league.
The club was founded in 1898 by Brazilian workers, Portuguese Brazilians and newly arrived Portuguese immigrants. Vasco created their football department in 1915, with professionalism officially adopted in 1933 - a pioneer in Brazil.

As someone who follows South American football closely, I think this is a decent move by Vasco. Colidio has shown flashes of brilliance at River Plate. But the real concern is their league position - 20 points from 18 games is worrying. New manager Pedro Emanuel has a huge task ahead!
Vasco da Gama has such a rich history - founded by Portuguese immigrants in 1898, pioneers in professionalizing Brazilian football. It's sad to see them struggling like this. But signings like Colidio show they're serious about staying up. Forca Vasco! 💪⚽🇧🇷
Interesting transfer strategy. Paying for only 50% of economic rights is becoming more common in South America. Colidio's stats at River (86 appearances) suggest he's experienced. But 4.5 million for half his rights seems steep for a club fighting relegation. Let's see how Emanuel uses him.
Vasco's story is so inspiring - from a rowing club to one of Brazil's most historic football teams. I hope this Argentine lad brings some magic to São Januário! Also, Pedro Emanuel coaching in India? No wait, that's Al-Nassr... anyway, good luck to them! 🍀⚽
A coach change plus a new striker - classic recipe for a relegation battle turnaround. But I hope Vasco's management isn't just throwing money around without a plan. The contract till 2029 shows faith in Colidio. Now Emanuel needs to get the best out of him. Big match coming up!
