CPI(M)'s Govindan Demands Financial Aid for Wayanad Landslide Victims' Kin

CPI(M) Kerala Secretary MV Govindan demanded urgent financial assistance for families of Wayanad landslide victims. He emphasized the need for immediate medical treatment and intensified rescue operations. Govindan criticized the Congress-led UDF for politicizing the tragedy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured full support from the Centre for a high-level probe.

Financial aid should be provided to kin of victims' families: CPI(M)'s Govindan on Wayanad landslide

Thiruvananthapuram, July 8

CPIM Kerala State Secretary MV Govindan on Wednesday demanded that the State government should provide urgent financial assistance to the kin of the victims families after a landslide struck the tunnel construction site at Kalladi in Meppadi Grama Panchayat at around 11:15 am on Tuesday, burying large sections of the worksite under an estimated 7 to 10 feet of mud and debris.

Expressing grief over the loss of lives, the CPIM leader emphasised the need for immediate medical and financial assistance for the victims.

"Paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the Wayanad landslide. All party workers and local residents should come forward to intensify the rescue operations. All systems should work with greater strength and intervention to bring out those trapped under the debris. The injured in the disaster should be provided with immediate expert medical treatment. Urgent financial assistance should be provided to the families of the deceased and those injured," Govindan said.

The State Secretary further slammed the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

"The UDF leaders and some media outlets are trying to use this issue for political attacks. This issue should not be viewed politically at this stage. The Leader of the Opposition and I will visit the disaster-affected areas of Wayanad this evening," he added.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday spoke to Keralam Chief Minister VD Satheesan over the Wayanad landslide tragedy and assured the state of full support from the Centre, while also calling for a high-level probe into the incident that claimed three lives and left five people missing.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Keralam Cabinet announced two separate investigations into the landslide. One probe will examine the circumstances that led to the accident, while the second will determine whether the environmental clearance conditions stipulated for the tunnel construction project were complied with.

The way both CPI(M) and Congress are turning this into a political blame game is really disappointing. Three people have died, five are missing, and all they care about is who will get the credit for the rescue. Govindan says don't politicize it but then slams the UDF in the same breath. Can't we just focus on saving lives first?

Good to see Centre stepping in and Amit Shah calling the CM. This is one of those times when we need all levels of government to work together. But two separate investigations? That sounds like a recipe for confusion. One clear, independent probe should be enough. Also, please ensure the environmental clearance conditions are actually followed this time.

I lived in Kerala for a while and loved it. This tragedy is heartbreaking. The terrain in Wayanad is so fragile, any construction without proper environmental checks is a disaster waiting to happen. My heart goes out to the families who have lost everything. Financial aid is important, but long-term rehabilitation and strict safety protocols are even more critical. 🕊️

Hats off to rescue workers who are risking their own lives to save others! But I'm concerned about the bigger picture. These tunnel projects in ecologically sensitive areas are often pushed through without proper studies. The state should have stricter oversight. Also, why is the CM not saying anything more substantive? Just investigations won't bring back the lives lost. 😔

As someone who follows Indian politics from abroad, this is a classic case of how disasters get politicized everywhere. The CPI(M) asking for aid is fine, but
