FIFA World Cup 2026: Ex Barcelona legend roped in as Mexico head coach after RO16 exit

Former Mexico and Barcelona legend Rafael Marquez has been named the new coach of the men's national side following their exit in the round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Having not conceded any goal till their round of 16 clash against England at the iconic Azteca venue, which they lost 2-3, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre announced his departure from the side. The succession plan takes place immediately after the co-hosts of the FIFA World Cup exit, in order to have him prepare for the 2030 edition by bringing in youngsters and rebuilding the entire team, as per Goal.com.
Marquez brings decent experience as a manager and a decorated career as a player, which includes multiple La Liga titles with Barcelona and two UEFA Champions League titles as a player with the Spanish giants. He also had stints with Atlas, Monaco, New York Red Bulls, Leon and Hellas Verona before retiring in 2018 after a 22-year career.
Marquez had recently been coaching Barcelona Atletic and was also the Mexico assistant coach this tournament. With Barcelona Atletic, he won 40 out of 82 games, losing 21 and drawing 21. This period in Spain helped him develop his skillset and structure as a manager, and the country's football association hopes that his experience will reap the fruits for the national side.
Aguirre accepted responsibility for his side's Round of 16 exit after defeat to England, while praising his players for their commitment.
Reflecting on the defeat, Aguirre described the result as heartbreaking but insisted his players had nothing to be ashamed of."We are a family. It is very painful. Our dreams just shattered, but those 26 players have made me very happy. They have to hold their heads up high. They left everything on the pitch," Aguirre said, as quoted by The Athletic.
The Mexico coach also took full responsibility for the team's elimination."If there is any criticism, it should be directed towards me," he added.
