FIFA WC: When and where to watch Algeria vs Austria, know all details
Kansas City, June 27
Algeria and Austria head into their final Group J fixture at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday knowing that avoiding defeat could be enough to extend their World Cup campaigns.
Both sides recovered from opening losses to Argentina by defeating Jordan, leaving them level on three points. Austria's superior goal difference puts Ralf Rangnick's men in the stronger position, with a draw likely securing second place behind the defending champions. Algeria, meanwhile, would be well placed to advance as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams if they earn a point.
The Fennecs showed resilience in their comeback victory over Jordan after falling behind early, while Austria responded to their defeat against Argentina with a composed display to keep qualification in their own hands.
Adding another layer of intrigue is the history between the nations. Their infamous meeting at the 1982 World Cup remains one of football's most controversial chapters, when the result between Austria and West Germany eliminated Algeria and prompted FIFA to introduce simultaneous kick-offs for final group-stage matches.
More than four decades later, Algeria have an opportunity to write a very different story.
Although the standings suggest a draw would suit both teams, neither side can afford to rely on mathematics alone. Austria possess the slight advantage, but Algeria's determination and growing confidence make them capable of upsetting the odds in what promises to be a tense, closely contested encounter with a place in the Round of 32 at stake.

Strange to see 'Riyad Mahrez' still in the squad - thought he retired from international football years ago! Either way, Algeria vs Austria has some serious 1982 baggage. I just hope both teams play fair and don't settle for a boring draw that eliminates third-place teams unfairly. FIFA really needs to review that third-place qualification system.
As a neutral, this is a proper knockout game before the knockout stages. Both teams have quality - Algeria's attack with Mahrez and Amoura vs Austria's defense with Alaba and Danso. The key battle will be in midfield where Laimer and Sabitzer need to dominate. My prediction: 1-1 draw, both teams advance. 🤞
Zee5 subscription required? Bhagwan, these platforms are milking every tournament! Anyway, Algeria has that North African spirit - they'll fight till the end. But Austria under Rangnick is tactically very strong. Going with 2-1 Austria, but hoping for an upset. Also, nice to see Luca Zidane in goal for Algeria - apple doesn't fall far from the tree! ⚽
Important match but I wish Indian news channels would give more airtime to our own football development rather than just World Cup coverage. Having said that, Algeria vs Austria is genuinely interesting - the 1982 controversy shows how football can be political. Want Algeria to win for justice! Also appreciate the detailed squad list for fantasy football purposes. 😅
Why are there no Indian players mentioned in these World Cup squads? Our cricket obsession is showing. Anyway, good luck to both teams - Austria has the edge with quality players like
