'Every girl's dreams valuable, voice powerful': J&K L-G on women's empowerment

Srinagar, July 6

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Monday that he envisions a J&K where every young girl grows up believing that her dreams are valuable, her voice is powerful, and her future holds limitless possibilities.

In his address, the Lieutenant Governor hailed the fellows as symbols of J&K's ongoing transformation toward a future built on self-confidence, equal opportunities and dignity for all.

He lauded the efforts of women's organisations for creating a robust platform where Nari Shakti from the region could move forward confidently, embrace their talent, ideas, and identities, and play a meaningful role in building a bright future for J&K.

"By challenging deeply entrenched stereotypes, these fellows have redefined what is possible. They have paved a new path for future generations and their contributions would serve as a foundation of inspiration, confidence, and guidance for years to come," the Lieutenant Governor said.

He paid homage to historical icons such as Rani Didda, Kota Rani, Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon, and Mata Rupa Bhawani, who had shaped the consciousness of J&K and contributed to its development. He highlighted that the women of J&K have always scaled the highest peaks of Nari Shakti.

"We have many such remarkable examples before us, and I wish for the women of J&K to lead the region's development," he said.

The Lieutenant Governor expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for empowering the women of J&K by granting them their due rights and eliminating discrimination.

He outlined a progressive vision for the Union Territory, powered by women leaders. "Women's empowerment is key to a Viksit J&K; their progress ensures the progress of society. I envision a J&K where women lead in academia, industry, social organisations and governance, shaping policies, driving entrepreneurship, and enriching our culture through art and literature.

"I envision a J&K where every young girl grows up believing that her dreams are valuable, her voice is powerful, and her future holds limitless possibilities," the Lieutenant Governor said.

He urged us to remain steadfast in our resolve to accord due respect to our Nari Shakti, while creating an environment that fosters their capabilities and progress.

The Lieutenant Governor emphasised the need to address the rising challenge of substance abuse among women. He advised the fellows to conduct a comprehensive, region-specific analysis to identify its underlying root causes.

He said that this study will significantly strengthen rehabilitation frameworks and provide vital support to our daughters and sisters who have fallen victim to drug addiction.

He also hoped that the dedication of all the members of women's organisations would catalyse positive change in the lives of countless women in the years to come.

Words are comforting, but let's be real. Without proper implementation and safety on ground, these speeches remain hollow. We need more women in decision-making positions, not just token appreciation. Substance abuse among women is a serious issue - glad he highlighted it, but action matters more than speeches.

Respect to the LG for acknowledging our historical icons. Rani Didda and Kota Rani were powerful rulers who administered Kashmir brilliantly. Women's empowerment isn't a new concept for us - it's about reviving our traditions.

As someone from the valley, I can tell you that women here have always been the backbone of our society. But we need more than speeches - we need jobs, safe public spaces, and equal property rights. The substance abuse issue he mentioned is very real, especially in rural areas. Good to see it being addressed at this level.

Proud to see this focus on Nari Shakti in J&K! The idea of women leading in academia and governance is exactly what we need. But let's not forget that many girls in remote areas still struggle to complete basic education. Hope these fellows can bridge that gap.

Good intentions, but I'm skeptical. We've heard many promises for J&K women. The ground reality is different - domestic violence cases, lack of maternal healthcare in border areas, and unemployment. The LG should focus on practical steps like setting up more women's helplines and skill development centers.
