Ahmedabad BRTS Goes Electric, Smart for 2030 Commonwealth Games

Ahmedabad is rapidly upgrading its Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) as it prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The system, which currently runs nearly 380 buses including 150 electric vehicles, aims for complete fleet electrification by 2026-27. A central Command and Control Centre uses smart CCTV for round-the-clock surveillance of buses and stations to enhance commuter safety. Passengers report feeling safer, especially women, citing clean electric buses and robust security monitoring as key improvements.

"Ahmedabad aims to become the first city in the country to operate a 100 per cent electric BRTS fleet by 2026-27. - Amrutesh Aurangabadkar"

Ahmedabad, February 12

As Ahmedabad prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the city is rapidly strengthening its public transport infrastructure with a strong focus on sustainability and safety. The Bus Rapid Transit System, operated by Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, is leading this transformation.

Currently, the BRTS operates nearly 380 buses, including around 150 electric vehicles, serving more than 2.2 lakh passengers daily across a 160-kilometre network. The larger goal is complete electrification of the fleet in the coming years.

Amrutesh Aurangabadkar, Executive Director of BRTS, said Ahmedabad aims to become the first city in the country to operate a 100 per cent electric BRTS fleet by 2026-27. He described the transition as a major milestone for Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited and a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility.

Alongside its green push, the BRTS has strengthened commuter safety through advanced monitoring systems. A central Command and Control Centre keeps round-the-clock surveillance on buses and stations using smart CCTV cameras for real-time tracking.

Rahul Sharma, General Manager (Operations), BRTS, said around 330 buses operate daily and are continuously monitored. CCTV cameras installed at every station help track ticketing, staff operations and passenger movement to ensure smooth and secure services.

Passengers say the improvements are clearly visible. Regular commuters highlight cleaner buses, enhanced security and better operational control as key positives.

Sakshi Balasara, a daily commuter, said she feels extremely safe while travelling on BRTS, adding that the buses are clean and equipped with cameras for security and surveillance.

Another passenger, Rushikesh Vyas, noted that most buses are now electric and that the service is especially reassuring from a women's safety perspective. He said even late-night travel feels safe and secure.

With the 2030 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, Ahmedabad's BRTS is positioning itself as a Games-ready transport model - electric, technology-driven and aligned with global standards of safe and sustainable urban mobility.

Great initiative, but I hope the execution matches the plan. We've seen many "smart city" projects get delayed. The 2030 Games are a good deadline, but the daily commuter's experience matters more than just preparing for a global event. Let's see if the maintenance keeps up.

As someone who visited Ahmedabad last year, the BRTS was already quite efficient. Electrifying the entire fleet and boosting safety is a massive upgrade. This sets a brilliant precedent for sustainable urban mobility ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Well done, Gujarat!

The safety features are the best part! As a woman who uses public transport daily, knowing there is 24/7 surveillance and real-time tracking makes a huge difference. Feeling safe during late-night travel is not a luxury, it's a necessity. More power to Ahmedabad Janmarg! 🙌

Electric buses are good, but what about the power source? Is Gujarat's electricity grid ready to handle this massive shift to EVs without relying on coal? True sustainability means clean energy from generation to wheels. Hope they've factored in renewable energy partnerships.

Serving 2.2 lakh passengers daily is impressive! If the service remains affordable for the common citizen while going green, it's a win-win. Hope the ticket prices don't shoot up because of these "global standard" upgrades. Public transport should stay accessible.
