'Ensures voices of opposition ring out more strongly': MK Stalin to newly elected TN Speaker, Dy Speaker

DMK chief MK Stalin congratulates JCD Prabhakar and Ravishankar as TN Speaker and Deputy Speaker, urging them to respect opposition voices in the assembly.

"ensures the voices of the opposition parties ring out more strongly within the house - MK Stalin"

New Delhi, May 12

DMK Chief MK Stalin on Tuesday extended best wishes to JCD Prabhakar and Ravishankar for being elected as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, urging them to uphold the dignity of the House and ensure the opposition is heard.

In a post on X, Stalin emphasised the significance of the designations and affirmed that the two titleholders must uphold the "dignity of the assembly."

"My heartiest congratulations to Thiru. J.C.D. Prabhakar, who has been elected as the Hon'ble Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, and to Thiru. Ravishankar, who has been elected as the Hon'ble Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. The two individuals seated in a position of honor graced by the greatest of personalities must uphold that tradition and the dignity of the Assembly," he said.

Highlighting that the number of members from other parties exceeds that of the ruling party, Stalin said that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker must "respect" the voice of the opposition in the assembly. He added that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker should conduct proceedings in a way that reflects the electoral mandate.

"In the Legislative Assembly, the number of members from other parties exceeds that of the ruling party. That is the verdict of the people in this system! I believe that the two elected to these esteemed positions will guide the Assembly in a manner that respects this and ensures the voices of the opposition parties ring out more strongly within the house," he added.

This comes after the newly formed Assembly met after Chief Minister Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) recorded a thumping victory in the elections.

TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected as the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker. Prabhakar, who was elected from the Thousand Lights constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections, defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate Ezhlian Naganathan.

Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly and DMK MLA, Udhayanidhi Stalin, praised Chief Minister Vijay for meeting the DMK leadership and called for "political civility" in the House.

He said that the ruling government and the opposition should work together for the development of the state. Further, he also expressed concerns over Vande Mataram, the national song, being played ahead of Tamil Nadu's State song at the swearing-in ceremony.

The fact that opposition parties outnumber ruling party in Tamil Nadu assembly is a healthy sign for democracy. Stalin's call for respecting the mandate and letting opposition voices ring out is what we need more of across India. Let's see if it actually translates to constructive debates.

Interesting development in Tamil Nadu politics. The shift in power dynamics with TVK's victory and DMK now in opposition will make for some engaging debates. Hope the Speaker remains truly impartial - that's always the challenge when ruling party's own person is in the chair.

Udhayanidhi's call for political civility is ironic given his own party's history of disruptions. But I appreciate the sentiment of working together for state development. The Vande Mataram issue should be addressed with maturity - it's about national unity, not regional pride. 🎯

Stalin's advice is fair - when opposition has more seats, the Speaker must ensure they are heard. But let's not forget that DMK when in power often muzzled opposition too. Hopefully TVK sets a better example. The House should be a place for debate, not drama. 🙏

The Vande Mataram issue raised by Udhayanidhi seems like a needless distraction from more pressing matters like Tamil Nadu's economy and development. While cultural sensitivities matter, our leaders should focus on governance first. Let the Speaker focus on running the House smoothly.
