Eknath Shinde pays tribute to Satyajit Ray on birth anniversary
Mumbai, May 2
Marking the birth anniversary of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday paid tribute to the iconic auteur, highlighting his lasting influence on cinema and literature.
Taking to his X handle, Shinde wrote, "On the occasion of his birth anniversary, humble salutations to the Oscar award-winning, internationally renowned Indian film writer, musician, producer, director, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, #BharatRatna Satyajit Ray for his extraordinary contributions to the field of cinema."
Born on May 2, 1921, in Kolkata, Ray remains one of India's most celebrated cultural figures. A pioneering filmmaker, writer, illustrator, music composer, and calligrapher, he played a pivotal role in placing Indian cinema on the global map.
His debut film, Pather Panchali, along with the acclaimed Apu Trilogy, earned international recognition for their deeply humanistic storytelling and realistic portrayal of life.
Ray's cinematic legacy also includes masterpieces such as 'Charulata' and 'Mahanagar', widely regarded for their emotional depth and nuanced realism.
Beyond filmmaking, Ray made significant contributions to literature and design. He created iconic fictional characters like Feluda and enriched children's literature with his imaginative storytelling.
Over his lifetime, Ray received numerous honours, including the Academy Honorary Award and India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, recognising his unparalleled contribution to world cinema.

Satyajit Ray was not just a filmmaker but a complete artist - writer, illustrator, musician. His Feluda stories are still my childhood favourites! But I wish our leaders would focus more on preserving and promoting Indian cinema heritage rather than just posting on social media.
As a film student from the US, I've always admired Ray's work. The Apu Trilogy is required viewing in my classes. Wonderful tribute from the Maharashtra government.
Satyajit Ray's contribution to Indian cinema is unmatched. From Charulata to Mahanagar, his films captured the soul of Bengal. It's heartening that leaders across party lines remember him. 👏
Interesting to see a politician pay tribute to a cultural icon. Ray's humanistic storytelling transcends borders. His Oscar and Bharat Ratna were well deserved!
I grew up reading Feluda and watching Ray's films with my grandfather. His legacy is not just in awards but in how he made us see our own lives differently. Great tribute, though I hope more is done to restore his original prints and make them accessible to young people today.
Satyajit Ray was a genius who showed the world the beauty of Indian storytelling. Pather Pan
