Ebola outbreak in Congo reaches 1,077 suspected cases, 246 deaths
Kinshasa, May 28
The number of cases linked to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to rise, with 1,077 suspected cases reported since the outbreak began, including 246 deaths, the Congolese government said on Wednesday.
According to DPA, 121 infections had been confirmed in the laboratory, including 17 fatal cases.
The World Health Organisation believes the actual figure is significantly higher as the outbreak in Ituri province, on the border with Uganda and South Sudan, went unnoticed for weeks, and not all cases are being reported.

Why is WHO always late in catching these outbreaks? The article says it went unnoticed for weeks. If it spreads to Uganda or South Sudan, it becomes our problem too. We share borders indirectly. Call for global action already.
As someone who works in global health, this is heartbreaking. The infrastructure in Ituri is fragile. We need more labs and rapid response teams. Praying for the people of DRC. 🙏
This is scary. Remember how Ebola hit West Africa in 2014? Millions were affected. With air travel, no country is safe. India must screen travelers from Congo rigorously at airports. Better safe than sorry.
The underreporting is deeply concerning. 1,077 suspected but only 121 confirmed? That's a huge gap. WHO and local authorities need to scale up testing and contact tracing immediately. Lives are at stake.
India has vaccines for Ebola? We should donate some doses. Our diplomats in Africa need to be careful too. This outbreak could destabilize the region. Not just a health issue, but a security concern for all.
246 deaths out of 1,077 cases? That's a 23% fatality rate. Ebola is brutal. I hope the global community
