Good that the NCS was quick to report. Depth of 26 km is not too shallow, so surface damage might be limited. But aftershocks can be unnerving. Let’s hope our disaster response teams are on standby.
I was visiting Gangtok last week. Felt a slight tremor last night but didn’t realize it was a 5.8! Glad it happened late night when most were indoors. Hope Bhutan has good building codes—these quakes are increasing.
As a seismologist-in-training, this is interesting. The location is near the Main Central Thrust—classic Himalayan tectonics. But I’m worried about infrastructure in rural Bhutan. Hope no lives lost. 🙏
My cousin lives in Thimphu and said it was a scary jolt—things fell off shelves. Good that depth was 26 km not 10 km, but still a strong shake. India should help if needed. Regional cooperation matters.
I wish the article had more details—any reports of damage or casualties? The NCS data is fine, but news outlets need to follow up with ground reports. Otherwise it's just raw numbers.
These Himalayan quakes always remind us how fragile life is. Bhutan
