Depth of 50 km is significant. Thankfully, it was early morning so most people were at home and not in crowded markets or offices. Still, a 5.1 can cause damage to older structures. Time to audit building codes in seismic zones again.

The National Centre for Seismology is quite prompt with their updates on X. Good use of social media for public safety information. Hope the local administration is equally quick in assessing the situation.

Living in Assam must be so challenging with these frequent tremors. My heart goes out to the people there. Does India have an effective early warning system for earthquakes like some other countries?

We get these alerts, but what about preparedness at the ground level? In my opinion, regular earthquake drills in schools and offices in Zone V are missing. Just posting coordinates on X isn't enough.

Bhagwan sabki raksha kare. It's scary to wake up to the house shaking. We felt mild tremors here in Dibrugarh too. Everyone, please check on your elderly neighbours and have an emergency kit ready.
