Earthquakes can occur anywhere between the Earth's surface and about 700 kilometres below the surface. For scientific purposes, this earthquake depth range of 0 - 700 km is divided into three zones: shallow, intermediate, and deep, as per USGS data.

Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep. In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km, the USGS states.

Just downloaded the BhooKamp App as advised. It's actually quite user-friendly and gives real-time alerts. A must-have for anyone living in seismic zones like Assam.

The NCS is doing a good job with timely updates on X. But I wish the local administration would also conduct more awareness drives in villages about what to do during and after a quake.

My family is from Silchar, not far from Hailakandi. They felt the tremors but thankfully no damage. The region is so prone to these. Stay safe, everyone.

Shallow depth of 5 km is concerning. Even a moderate magnitude can cause significant shaking at that depth. Good that they're providing precise coordinates and info.

The article explains the depth classifications well. It's a reminder that India needs to invest more in seismic research and early warning systems, not just in Assam but across the Himalayan belt.
