EAM Jaishankar interacts with visiting UN Permanent Representatives from 17 countries
New Delhi, Aug 5
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has interacted with Permanent Representatives of the United Nations from 17 countries who are visiting India on a study tour.
"Delighted to interact with Permanent Representatives of the United Nations from 17 countries, visiting India on a study tour. As the global order transforms, reformed multilateralism reflecting the aspirations of the Global South is the need of the hour," EAM Jaishankar said on Tuesday on social media platform X.
"Our discussions also touched upon technology, maritime safety, peacekeeping, development partnership and disaster response. Wish them a pleasant stay in India," he added.
On Sunday, Sibi George, MEA Secretary (West), hosted a dinner for a United Nations delegation and shared India's perspectives on multilateralism.
"MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George hosted a welcome dinner for a delegation of Permanent Representatives to the UN who are on a week-long familiarisation visit to India. He shared India's perspectives on multilateralism and the UN and wished the delegation a fruitful stay in India," the MEA said on X.
In July, EAM Jaishankar launched India's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term in New York, outlining New Delhi's vision for a more representative, effective and future-ready global order.
Highlighting India's broader vision for global governance, the EAM said: "India's focus will be on working for a secure, peaceful and equitable world. A world where the voice of the Global South is heard in equal measure. A world where peacekeeping is ready for contemporary and future challenges, a world where multilateralism reflects contemporary realities and provides effective solutions, not remain on high standards, a world where the promise of technologies is fulfilled."
He added that India's approach would be rooted in SHANTI - Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity -- and would focus on strengthening the voice of the Global South in matters relating to international peace and security.

Interesting move by India. But will reformed multilateralism actually happen, or is this just political posturing? The UNSC reform has been discussed for decades without much progress. Let's see if India can walk the talk.
This is exactly what we need! The world can't keep ignoring the developing nations. India's vision for a more representative UN is spot on. The SHANTI framework sounds promising. 👏
Good to see India engaging with UN representatives, but I hope this isn't just about getting a UNSC seat. The real focus should be on actionable solutions for peacekeeping and climate change, not just diplomatic dinners.
India's growing role in global governance is commendable. The emphasis on technology and maritime safety is particularly relevant in today's world. Hopefully, this study tour leads to stronger partnerships.
Bharat's rise on the global stage is unstoppable! 🌟 Jaishankar ji is doing a fantastic job representing our interests. The Global South needs a strong advocate, and we are leading from the front.
A week-long study tour for 17 UN ambassadors—sounds like a smart move by India to build alliances. But I'd like to see more transparency about what India's concrete proposals are for UNSC
